Tractor model

Can anyone tell this city girl how to find the make model or year for a tractor we inherited.
All I could find is Farmall IH and then 1881b
on the other side I find 8638BE or DE. Not sure on the letter.
I need to get a battery and don't know what size, 6 or 12.

Any clues will be appreciated. My daddy told me it still runs if I get new tires and a batter.

Thanks

Posting a picture would help a lot. Don't know what your first number is. If your second one is 8638DE, it is the part number of the bell housing used on the Farmall A and Farmall B. The A is a narrow tractor with a wide front. The B is a wide tractor with a narrow front. Originally, it would have come with a 6-volt group 1 battery. Someone may have converted it to 12 volts. Does it appear to have the original generator or a more modern alternator?

If there are three caps on top of the battery to put fluid in it it is a 6 volt. If there are 6 caps it is a twelve volt. If there are no caps, you can take it with you when you go to get a new one and they can match it up. There's probably a core charge you have to pay if you don't have the old battery. rw

Thanks for all the advice. I know it has not been altered so it will be a six volt battery. There is none on it so I had to ask. I still don't know the year it is and maybe can get a picture next time I am out there.

Thanks all

Just in case, polarize the generator before you start it on the new battery, just in case they did have a negative ground hook up on it.
