Farmall M Idling Problem

I just bought a Farmall M Tractor and haven"t worked on the M"s very much. It ran a little rough so I took the carb apart and cleaned it out and put a kit in it. Now I can get the tractor to run very smooth but it just doesn"t want to idle down to a slow idle. I have adjusted the throttle stop screw, and have it backed out till the engine doesn"t slow down any more and I have the mixture about right too, but if I push on the govenor rod to try to get it to slow down more, it will kill the engine. Can any of you Farmall guys out there tell me what the problem may be? Thanks for any help!

do you have the governor tab in the slot? it only fits one way and is easy to miss. adjust main needle valve 21/2 to 3 turms out. mixture out 1 turn, and idle set at 450 rpm and this makes it run good with little fine tuning.

Did you have the throttle plate off when you put the kit in? Our SMTA carb was overhauled by a shop mechanic & he got the throttle plate in upside down. Engine would idle at about 1000 RPM. Even if your plate is in right side up, it may still need centering in the bore.

How far did you go with the carb rebuild? I'm kind of thinking that maybe the throttle shaft and/or bushing is worn out, and if there is too much slop in how it all fits, the throttle plat in the carb will not respond well to what the governor is telling it to do.

so what did you find? nobody ever lets us know what they have found to be there problem. i think that is only being curtious. we spend time giving you the best answer with the info we get and dont even know how you fixed the problem.some people dont even use there brain to figure things out , just jump on the computer and are asking instead of being rational.and anotherthing that anoys me is when i give my opion and someone else types inthe same thing that ijust said.when i see the right answer i just say joe is correct.what is the sense in repeating an answer 3 times?lots of times when i see an answer i am satisfied with i dont even ring in.

Well, Thanks to all you guys who responded. With all due respect, I had fully intended on letting you all know what I found. I checked the govenor connection in to the carb. and it was ok. I did not remove the throttle plate when I had the carb apart as it looked ok. I know that it is in the right way. All I can come up with is that I did feel just a tiny bit of play in the throttle shaft. Could it be possible that it is just enough to make it suck air through there? I can get the tractor to idle down but it just seems like it won't idle slow enough. I don't have a tachometer handy but I'm pretty good at knowing the proper idle speed by ear. The idle mixture screw is at about 1/2 turn open. I live at 5500 ft. elevation. The high speed screw is at about 2 turns open. My conclusion is that I probably will take the carb. off and send it into Denny's carb. shop for a rebuild and have the throttle shaft fixed, and maybe there is something else wrong that I didn't catch. It runs good at half or full throttle, it just doesn't seem to want to idle down as slow as it should and is a little rough when it does idle. I am still open to any advise, but I think I will just send the carb. in for a good rebuild. Thanks again for all your comments. And as far as jumping right on the computer to get advise from you IH Gooroos you should feel good that we are seeking advise from someone wiser!! ( LOL )

Thanks for the info about Denny's. Can you give me the info on Rusty Farmall so I can get in touch, or who else would you recommend to do a carb. rebuild for a Farmall M? Thanks for the response.
