F 20 no spark

Seems my f20 has lost spark. Points seem to be opening and closing and I'm pretty well lost after there. Old friend said the magnet may need charged on the magneto (has F4). Where should I start with this one? Thanks for the help guys!

you may need to just file the points if it has not run in a long time.should have gave more info. like was it running and stopped?maybe the spark is still in the field if its lost!just joking!

Im NOT an IHC Mag guy butttttttttttttt the very first thing I would do if the points are like gray oxide coated is to non abrasively clean/buff/polish them shiny n see what happens. If they are burned or pitted a points file may get her going but if they are badly burned Id get a new set. Is the imuplse spring assembly winding then tripping/releasing with a good loud SNAP as you slowly crank the engine over??? If its sticking or gunked up she cant spark at cranking speed, you gotta heAr that sharp SNAP FOR THE MAG TO FIRE WHEN YOURE CRANKING IT OVER. Sometimes a good clean up and light lube can free up a sticking impulse.

If its more serious IM OUT TO LUNCH on IHC mags but this mat get you going

Clean those points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny. If they're pitted replace them. You can check the magnetism in your magnet with a flatblade screwdriver. Should attract it with good effort. Here's an old Wico mag off a Twin cylinder garden tractor with weak magnets. Most of these tractors were never sheltered from the weather. Hal

Clean up the points. Do you have the advance cover on the mag adjusted to where the mag is NOT grounded? Put in a new coil and condenser if it still has no spark. Still nothing, try the coil. If thats fine, you may need to have the horse shoe magnet recharged.

Yes but the principles are the same so what he said about the screwdriver is still true. Like the others Id say clean the points check where you have the impulse set etc. But you may end up needing to charge the magnet.

I know, but the reason I pointed this out is because the F-20 magneto shaft looks just like a magnet, but it is not, there would be no magnetisim there, only from the horse shoe magnet. I just thought it would be good to point out so he checks the maget charge from the right place.

I had/have a similar problem with my '37 F-20. Was getting no spark. Cleaned/gapped plugs and points. Checked wires and removed cap to check brushes to make sure they weren't stuck and noticed the secondary lead spring was bent and after fixing it and reinstalling cap I had spark. It now tries to start and runs rough as long as the pawl is engaged but dies when the pawl disengages. Have tried adjusting spark lever and that doesn't help.
