Grade 8 or 5 Bolts for F-20 Engine?

I am rebuilding an F-20 engine. It was disassembled on pallets when I got it and most of the bolts are missing or in very bad shape. I looked up the bolts/fasteners for the engine in the parts manual and ordered most of that list from Fastenal.Grade 8 or 5 Bolts for F-20 Engine?Grade 8 or 5 Bolts for F-20 Engine. But when they came in about half are grade 5 and half are grade 8. Is grade 5 OK, or should have them reorder and get all grade 8?

Thanks,

Dan

It depends on where the bolts go. For example, The clutch pressure plate and the clutch housing can be grade 5. Those are all 3/8 in. bolts, so torque would be 25-30 lbs. Bolts for motor mounts can be grade 5 or 8; either one is OK since the bolts are only holding the motor on the frame rails. You didn't mention cylinder head studs, but they would be grade 5 also, with maximum torque on cylinder head about 75 lbs. In general, I would use grade 5 on all replacement bolts. I torque everything when reassembling. Follow torque values according to bolt size. Hope this helps.

Grade 5 is overkill for 90% of the hardware on any old Farmall. Certainly grade 8 is money out the window.
