560 Hydraulics Quit - Making Very Loud Noises

Well, Dad called me a while ago, very distressed. Said he went out to mow with the brush hog around the corners of the field where they couldn"t get with the baler and he engaged the PTO and went about 50 feet through the 18" to 24" high pasture grass and the tractor made this loud howling noise with grinding like a bearing eating itself alive. He lost power steering and lift on the loader and drawbar. It has a 2 point fast hitch and an F11 Farmhand loader on it. It is a 1963 Farmall 560 Diesel.

So, dad disengaged the PTO, ran about about 600rpms as he was only about a 1/4 mile from the barn. He idled and arm wrestled it into the barn and then he said 1/2 inch at a time he got the loader high enough to get a board under it to remove if needed. It is still howling and growling and grinding LOUDLY.

First, is the PTO some how hooked to the hydraulics or was it just cooincidence that it happened after he started mowing. I was thinking on the 560 it is separate unlike the 706 that are hydraulic PTOs.

Second, could this be the gears that drive/mesh in the hydraulic pump that went bad and need replacing.

Any notorious issues with these hydraulic pumps on the 560?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Sounds like the splines or hub in the clutch cover that drive the PTO drive gear have stripped out. The PTO drive gear itself can also break. Your going to have to split the tractor and replace the clutch and most likelly the PTO drive gear.

Indirectly yes. The constant running shaft that drives the pto also drives the hydraulic pump. So the pto is likely fine and your issue is probably the pressure plate and constant runnning shaft like Scott was saying. Becasue like you said the PTO is sealed from the rest of the transmission and is manually engaged and disengaged.

okay, sounds like a trip to the local repair shop as we dont have a way to split the tractor, it does need the clutch replaced and torque fixed too so I presume we could get that done at the same time. Thanks for your info guys, its going to be an expensive repair I guess.
