Water leak on 560 Diesel

Okay guys, I am a rookie to this site, but have read many of the postings. I bought this tractor and went to load it and coolant started gushing out from the bottom of the waterpump. So, I assumed that it needed a new waterpump. I took the old one off, cleaned up everthing and noticed a third hole between the two that connect to the waterpump. I thought that it must be a place for the head of one of the waterpump bolts. I installed the new pump and the next day went to add coolant and the coolant came right back out of the same place. What the heck is going on?
 
Can't remember for sure, but there is a by-pass hose that is in that area which has a bleeder for getting air out of the head when filling the engine with water--coolant. Raining cats & dogs right now, so will look later. Maybe this is what you are describing?
 
There is a small hose that comes out on the right side of the pump, but the water is coming out from underneath the pump.
 
That being the case, I think there is a small frost plug behind the pump. Could be rusted or leaking. Hope it's not a crack. Probably have to pull the pump again to clean the area & find where the trouble is. No cracks or such in the pump itself are there?
 
I too hope there isn't a crack! I don't think that its the pump, it is brand new and odd that it would do the same thing as the old one. Do you know where I can get a frost plug or at least see a diagram of if there is one back there?
 
Got to thinking--- could it be dripping down from the top radiator hose-thermostat housing area? Also,--hope it isn't the head gasket. If the pump is off, I'd clean the area really well & see what's what. The frost plug is probably one of the inch or smaller size. Doubt that IH parts blow-up would show them individually, though. Just have to size them by measure.
 
Can you tell if the head has been worked on recently--clean--maybe a little light rust? Possibly the machine shop forgot to put a frost plug back in??
 
Frost plug is in block , problem is that the timing gear cover and plate behind timing gears cover over half of the frost plug. I have seen and heard of different ways to repair this, some work, some don't. Right way is to remove all parts covering it but that is a major project. Camshaft gear is biggest problem. If you remove gear without shaft then you need a special tool to install gear so as you don't knock rear frost plug out of rear of block. More fun. Your call.
 
Nope, no signs of head work. I just went out and re-check it, by adding some water and sure enough. I ran right out the bottom. I'm attaching some pics.

Well here is a diagram from the website. the frostplug is number 1. Also what kind of shape is the upper radiator hose in? Mine was dried out so it would no longer seal around the water pump and water would leak out down and around the water pump. So I thought it was the pump but I replaced the hose and it stopped leaking.

I just put new hoses on when i put the new pump. I looked for that too, but no luck. Guess this means I get to tear her down again :(
Where did you get that diagram? I don't have any manauals or anything and this would be helpful.
 
It looks like your new water pump has a problem. The hole in the bottom of the pump is to allow coolant to leak when the seal fails. Otherwise the coolant would enter the bearing and destroy it which could result in more problems.

If no lubricant is used between the seal and the impeller when the pump is assembled, running the engine with no coolant can ruin the seal very quickly.

From the pics, looks like it's coming from the thermostat area. Much easier than taking the pump off again. I might not be correct here, but worth a closer look.
 
Sure does look like it could be coming from the weep hole on the pump---unlikely, though that both pumps are leaking the same. Where did you buy the pump? Can't remember---does the pump have a tin plate on the back, or is it just the casting bolted up? That's been years since we did our 560's pump--mind gets a little fuzzy.
 
That D-282 engine is known to blow head gaskets. My 560D blew 1 head gasket for the original owner. My Dad brought the tractor in1964 0r '65 and since then we have blown two head gaskets the last one about 1992. Check that head real good! Although I don't recall the water leaking as fast as you say yours is but anything is possible. Whatever the problem ends being it's not the end of the world. Armand
 
Sure looks like it is coming from the frost plug from the picture. Poke around a little bit under the pump , it will be all filled in with dirt and grease etc.
 
I will need to look where I bought the pump, but I agree, I don't think both would leak the same.
It has the tin plate on back.
 
I have seen seen several pumps leak out the weep hole after they have been rebuilt. The cheap kits use an impeller that just has a machined surface for the seal to ride on. Any imperfections will allow coolant to leak out. The IH kits use a ceramic disk with a rubber seal pressed into the impeller. If the ceramic cracks the pump will leak. It is also possible that the bellows in the seal itself are damaged.

Verify that the leak is indeed coming from the weep hole. If it is you have a defective pump.
 
Okay gang, I took the old w/p off and there is water coming out of the middle hole (I'm guessing this is the one that goes down the front of the block where the freeze plug(s) are?). Does anyone have some advice on how to tear into this? Looks like the Do I need to remove the radiator and the front-end? Do I need to support the front of the engine (looks like there is a engine mount on each side)?.
