H and the mesh gear

I found the culprit that is making all noise. It is the constant mesh gear. It is missing one tooth. Is there any way of fixing it with out splitting the tractor. What would a shop charge me to fix it. Any iformation would be appreciated.

Thanks

The tractor doesn't have to be split to remove either the top gear - or the one on the countersaft for that matter. Search the archives or follow your repair (service) manual for removing the pressure plate and drive shaft. The constant mesh gear is part of the transmission input shaft cage assembly which comes out of the front of the transmission case. While you are at it, carefully check the pilot bearing on the front of the sliding gear (top) shaft. Also, replace any worn or rough bearings in the housing and replace the seal if you even think it might leak in the next ten years. Gaskets for this were still available from Case/IH as of last year.

There are some guys who say you don't need to split, but I think you have to. Dad & I HAD to split Dad's H when the constant mesh gear lost 3 teeth from a bolt in the transmission. Split it right where the transmission bolts to the tractor. Its not as hard as it seems, even for me and I don't have a lot of tools. ;) I hoist works well to support the tractor, and we used the Farmall 300 with a homemade boom on the fast hitch to move the rear half of the tractor.

To get the countershaft out of the transmission you need to first remove the bearings. Once the bearings are off, the shaft and gear assembly will come out as one piece. You can then use a press to remove the gears from the shaft.

You don't have to split the tractor, you have to take the transmission cover off and then you can get it out. It can be quite a job.

I rebuilt the whole rear end of my H without splitting. While it is apart, might as well put in new bearings if yours are worn. One thing though, the new aftermarket constant mesh gears are VERY noisy for some reason. Mine made a whine that you could hear 3 blocks away! had it back apart several times and still whined. Put in a good used set of gears and no more whine. Get bearings and seals from a bearing house/ or an industrial power transmission supply company and it won"t cost nearly as much to do the job. I got my Bearings and seals from "Coldwell" in Terre Haute IN. I did get the gaskets from Case IH.
