Front of H block

While redoing the gaskets on my H engine; I have the front cover off and pulled the camshaft gear then the front "plate" behind that is this round "plug" (circular) directly above the crankshaft about 6-8 inches. This plug is about an inch in diameter and has a hole in the middle of it, my question: is this soft plug supposed to have a hole in it like this, or is it rotted through? to me it acts that it is rotted through, if this is the case; do they just pop out, and order a new one and put it in? thanks for the help as always. Bob

To the best of my knowledge there is no core plug with a hole. Look in caseih.com search for parts. t see what is there. If it is a real metering hole, it will be a separate part. Welsh plug is also a correct term. Calling them freeze plugs is an old wrong name. based on the incorrect thinking that they would pop out protecting the casting. Nope. JimN

The early model H and M did have a "frost" plug (core hole) under front cover. Doesn't show it in parts layout but does list it .

These plugs are listed in the Parts Manual as "Crankcase Water Jacket Expansion Plugs" and are located at each end of the block.
It is possible, when these plugs corrode through, to have coolant leak down between the block and plate into the oil pan.
I am experiencing this very trouble right now on my W4. I have bought the plugs, just have to find the time to lift the engine out to get at them. There is a difference in size between front and rear, 1¾" and 2" but can't remember which is which. Sid.

Thanks for the help...I will call monday and see if I can get these welsh plugs...I used a seal puller and pryed against the block and it came out great...the other one is not corroded through but I think I may drill a small hole thru the middle and then use my seal puller and pull it out...it seems to work great for getting them out.
