574/D239 Fuel Delivery

I have drained the fuel tanks twice, replaced the fuel filters twice, replaced the flexible fuel line between filters and pump. When tractor is cold it will run OK for 20 minutes to an hour and then starts to miss, lose power and smoke. After initial start it takes 5 to 6 hours to cool down enough to run smoothly again. I was ready to replace injectors and/or pump until Friday. Tractor ran mower for 20 minutes before starting to miss, I parked it for 3-4 hours. Started it to bring home, it missed just pulling the mower on the level. Went down a 3/4 mile hill in 7th, it was against compression the whole way. Got to the bottom and it ran perfect the 2 miles home in 8th. pulling 2 hills on the way. What am I missing????

Hi Bill, very puzzling problem!! Is the problem a sticking injector or sticking valve? You could try some GM ATF in the Diesel fuel. The ATF is supposed to be very good at cleaning and lubing Diesel injections systems. What is the history on this tractor? Have you owned for long? Has it been parked for a long time? These German Diesels do not like to putter around. They will start to slobber and carbon up. They like to be worked hard.
Re valve, I am guessing here but wondering if there is a valve sticking or the valve adjustment is to tight and when it gets hot the valve cannot close completely but that does not explain running properly after going down a hill.

Good luck, let us know when you find the solution.
