706 d cyl head ??

came across a guy selling a 706 d with the d-282 diesel in it. motor has a bad head according to him. otherwise tractor not in bad shape 60%tires, weights, wide front. fair paint. just kind of a plain jane working tractor.. asking 1000 for tractor as it. tried to find a cylinder head on line, no luck. any ideas on a head? how does the price sound? has a 3 pt with rear weights. i was kind of thinking in running condition, maybe a 4-5 grand tractor? any thoughts?
 
Well if it was me i would not go looking for a head just yet as i would be looking at the HEAD GASKET first . Maybe a couple broken head bolts . For that money i don't care what is wrong with it. If you don't want it just send it on over here i am sure that i can make it live in just the matter of a bottle of C/R and she would live
 
vet, was the 282 a good solid motor? seems like the german diesel is one everybody is after. we had a 706 gasser years ago, and it was good tractor, but a little on the thirsty side.
 
The 282 was not a bad engine if ya learned how to start it a little on the hp.light side for the size of the tractor . But like all diesels ya had to warm them up and cool them down before shut down . They were good as long as one did not get carried away on trying to get more pony's out of them . you could push them 10-15% and get along fine but that was about the limit just like the 560's . Good batterys and good glow plugs they would start ok .
 
And one thing you have to remember when you install a new head gasket on a D282. The head gasket will fit upside down as well and the only difference is ONE oil hole in the gasket and you shut down oil flow to the top of the head. I know first hand so he needs to know to look very close to get the gasket on right.
 
Most D282 heads have cracks in them. We have a 560 and a 660 that run great, but have hairline cracks. I wouldn't be to afraid of it.
