H shutter control location and other questions

I am restoring a 1942 H, and I have a couple of quick questions. I am adding a belly pump, and and working on the arm that mounts on the steering post. it has 2 holes in it, I presume 1 is for the ON/OFF switch, and the other is for the shutter control crank. I am planning to place the ON/OFF switch in the hole closest to the steering post and the shutter control crank on the outer hole. Is this the correct placement?

Other question I have is about the foot starter rod. I know my SM has one, and I wanted to know if that would have been an appropropriate option on the 1942 H. The original starter button location for mine was the box mounted to the steering post using the same bolt as the electric box. However, I would like to use the foot starter. Any feedback here? The gas tank base does have the opening to install the starter button, and is original to the tractor.

Feedback is appreciated and welcome.

Tom thats some hard questions to give a simple or correct guarantee on the answer. Starting and lighting along with hydraulics were considered a attachment on the tractors, and there were more variations in attachments in the early models. I think the rear fuel tank support with hole for starter switch was used for all of 1942. Switch if equiped with, was operated by foot with a pin through the slanted hole in lower steering post. A steel bracket bolted to steering post for on off switch, shutter control and choke rod on 42 models. Some tractors used above mount along with the hydraulic control rod support. After posting the above you can find H tractors with parts mounted several ways. On the foot starter lever that uses a bracket that bolts to steering post. When IH came out with the hydraulic seat attachment (later than your tractor) for the tractors they came out with the foot starter bracket, because it made it hard to get at the ones with pin through steering post.
I think its the same starter bracket as M and early SM tractors.

Thanks for the reply. I would like to try to get this as right as possible without losing tooooo much sleep. I have all of the part that I mentioned, plus the ones you mentioned. I guess it will end up being what works out the best. I can certainly mount the starter switch on the post again, but it just seems better to have it on the tank support.

thanks again, and any additional comments are always welcome.

Have a look and see. thank danzil.

FD, don't want to take away from your answer or helpfullness in posting. But would like to point out your picture is from a later parts book. If the attachment was installed in 1942, I don't think the bracket for starter switch up on steering post was out until sometime in 43. Don't think the instrument box cover had the fuse holder in 42. Light switch isn't right for 42. Rear light bracket is the newer type are some differences. Earlier than 42 had some differences also.

Well, I looked at the H, and the choke rod goes through a little bracket bolted to the side of the tank support. Also, my flat plate that I have, has holes for the belt pulley, choke, and shuttlers.....no hole for the ON/OFF switch. Amp/light switch box has no fuse.

So, this is a start, makes you wonder what the 2 holes in the hydraulic rod arm are for.........

Does anyone have this picture out of a manual from 1941/42?

FD, this is a great start and a great idea...... thanks again.

Tom I have a 41 operators manual that came with the H used on the family dairy farm for around 30 to 35 years. It doesn't show any attachments, doesn't even show a starter. It was equiped with starting and lighting, hydraulics and belt pulley. Was also a straight gas tractor which wasn't that common then. Don't know if it came from IH with above parts installed or the dealer installed them. It was serial # 60 + thousand. Choke rod was mounted to gas tank support along with bracket for belt pulley engaging rod. There was no steel plate on steering post and the magneto kill switch was mounted in the inside hole of hydraulic rod support bracket. Starter switch was in the rear tank support and operated by a rod through steering post. I thought they moved the choke rod by 42, but maybe not. Lots of the tractors have the on off switch mounted in the hydraulic support. As I said in my first post there's a lot of gray areas on mounting of starting or lighting parts on early tractors. If dealers installed a lot of early ones that may account for some difference in mounting placements. May want to use what you like the best.
