Sickle bar mower

Hello Folks; Anyone able to quesstimate the weight of a old tow-behind sickle bar mower. I plan on moving it with a pick up truck and wonder if I will need help loading.

I have the same type of mower and I would guess the weight at 400#

They are darn heavy (lots of cast iron) and very awkward. IMHO, if not a loader, you'll surely need a couple of pretty strong backs. Good luck!

It is not very likely to happen with just two guys. It took three (27, 45, 50) to load it on the back of a lawnmower trailer.

I"d tell you that without a loader or bobcat or even a chain hoist, trying to lift it into a pick up bed would not be my first choice. With the rare exception that you"re unbelievably ------ at your back and don"t want it around anymore.

Hell, you can probably rent a come-along for $10 to drag it into your pickup. The other pain of the sickle bar is the odd weight distribution. Kinda like carrying a window A/C. If your side doesn"t have the compressor (sickle bar) you"re home free. I"d probably try to slip something under it and drag it into the bed if I didn"t have a point of lift.

If you think you can load it by yourself, go ahead and try, but you will definitely need help to get to the hospital after you hurt yourself.

Tow it home or get a low flatbed trailer to roll it up on.

I agree with the awkward part. Not only a sore back but lots of smashed fingers and several new dents in the tailgate. I'd bring my tool box along and take it apart before I'd try to lift it by hand in one peice.

I pulled a New Idea mower with my pick up for about 15 miles. I had no problems at all. I had a 1/2 ton pickup at the time.
