Farmall H Transmission Noise

I have a "49 Farmall H that I just rebuilt the transmission on this past spring. It"s been running well all summer until today. I put it under a good load plowing my garden. Now when I go to disengage the clutch to begin moving, the tractor grinds and jolts very hard. Once it"s rolling everything is smooth and mechanically sound. It"s happening in every gear including reverse. Like I say, it"s only when I let the clutch out. No matter how slow it all of a sudden jerks and grinds, then once rolling it"s all fine. Any idea what this is without having to tear the deck plate back off?

Thanks in advance...Andy

A partially disassembled coupling at the clutch shaft would do it. as would a coupling assembled with the drive spider backwards. A sticking chattering clutch will also make the sound/vibration.
I believe it can be fixed W/O splitting or tearing into the trans. Pulling the belly pump and inspecting will tell the tail. JimN

When you say drive spider you are talking about the thing that bolts the motor end up to the rear end? Mine didn't look like it had a direction, I hope I didn't do it wrong!

I dug into it. Looks to be the idler bearings at the end of the shaft on the clutch end. Theres lots of chatter in them.

He's talking about that spacer that has the 4 press fit bolts thru it connecting the drive shaft to the transmission. I do believe I had it backwards, most likely this is what caused those clutch bearings to go bad. If it's backwards the drive shaft wont have a strong fit in the flywheel causing slop. I've found this out the hard way.

Go to www.caseih.com. They have a parts catalog. If you go to the parts catalog and search farmall h, select from the chassis menu under that search category. From there you can navigate to the part of the tractor you're looking for. There is quite detailed diagrams that will show you the orientation of that part.

One way makes the shaft shorter as it enters the clutch/FW, the other makes it the right length. It is easier to put together wrong than right!! JimN

Maybe that is why mine seemed to go together WAY easier than it came apart. I just thought I was figuring it out! I guess I will take mine apart tomorrow to see if I got it right. I had to push the clutch shart forward to get the pedal yolk hooked up. Is that a sign that I did it right or wrong?

Here is a picture of mine. I think I lucked out and put it in correctly. THANKS FOR THE LINK RANDY!!!!!
