Super A Hydraulics

VT Super A

New User
I have a Super A with a snow plow on the front. It has trouble lifting it. I cleaned out the filter, and replaced the oil. That helped for four up/down cycles but it is back to not working. I can assist it up and it will hold it there, but it wont do it on its own. Any ideas?

Two answers. Put a spring on the plow to assist the lift.
Purchase a new hydraulic pump. If id did work, it might need a pump. If it has never worked, it might be too heavy, or have the wrong leverage to be able to lift. JimN

Is the oil staying in the reservoir? I lost my hydraulics only to find out there was no hyd oil (and no external leak). Blowby past the pump seal dumping the hyd oil into the crankcase turned out to be the culprit.

VT: Is this a factory No. 60 blade for Super A? If not the mechanical advantage might not be correct for maximum lift. These blades whereby rockshaft pulls back to lift, and that includes the No. 60, taxes that little SA hydraulic system to it's limit.

As Jim said try a spring that will assist lift. Another option is add a remote control valve and use a hydraulic cylinder for lifting blade. It could be your pump, most likely is if tractor use to lift the blade.

Thanks for the comments. The machine does have a spring and the oil is staying in the reservoir. I am not sure about the blade number but i believe it is original equipment, with some minor tweaks. Last night I ran the tractor for a short time and it lifted the blade slowly two or three times then nothing. I'm going to take some weight off the blade to run a test and go from their.

Has any one heard of bleeding the hydraulic lines after changing the oil?

VT: You don't bleed hydraulic lines. Unhook all load from tractor's rockshaft arms. Remove fill cap from reservoir, then at low idle run the rockshafts full stroke about a dozen times each. That should remove all air from the system. Air will all come back to reservoir and exhaust through open fill cap.

You may have to add more oil at that point, always do it with rockshafts in rear position.

I don't think the A-60 blade has any lift assist spring.

If cleaning the screen the first time made it work, check the strainer screen again. The old oil in the touch control reservoir may have left some more sludge that plugged the screen up. You may have to clean the screen a few times to get it all out.
