O-12 vs I-12

Looking at a O-12, I think, serial # on tool box says 0-12 OS1054. I have been looking at pictures (thanks Athol) and this tractor has small frt tires like a I-12. Other than tires is there any other differances betwean the two? Is there any where else for serial #, maybe not right toolbox? Thanks again for all help!

The early O-12 before serial number OS-1946 if my memory is correct, I am at present in Iceland and my manuals are out of reach, had the small 6.00 x 9'' tyres on the front and 9.00 x 24" tyres on the back. After Os-1946, sometime in mid 1936, they put a longer front axle on (ex narrow track 10-20) with 6.00 x 16" tyres on front and 11.25 x 24" tryes on back. They also changed from foot clutch to hand clutch and from hand brake levers to foot operated brakes and changed the seat from the padded basin like seat to the MB488 metal pan (as in mowers and binders etc.) which side hinged to allow easier access. The Fairway 12 (same tractor series but with serial FOS-xxxx) retained the smaller wheels, foot clutch and the original seat. The Fairway tractors had only a single brake pedal working very large expanding shoe brakes in the back wheels (the drums are there on the O-12 wheels but not used though the early O-12 had these brakes as an extra option, this disappeared with the Modified O-12 after OS-1946 as there was no room for the brake pedal on the right for these extra brakes as the pedal already there operated the right-hand brake on the differential shaft. The I-12 was virtually the same as the Fairway-12 (on rubber tyres, the default for the Fairway-12 was steel wheels, except the I-12 did not have a governor but just a foot accelerator

Here is my O-12

all the w12 series tractors have the serial number under the gas tank on the rear support. the block number will match the serial number. block number is on a flat spot left of fuel pump. made from 1934-1938. os 1054 is a 1934. very early ones have a dipstick to check oil. [gas model only], otherwise 2 test cocks on oil pan.. ..o12s [early] had hand brakes, one for each side, like an f12,one drum on each side of trans with the bands in drum, and a foot clutch........modified o12s[citrus package, all the extra sheetmetal] had foot brakes, [2 pedals]pads in a drum, one on each side of trans, with a over center [hand] clutch......... i12 would have foot brakes,[one pedal], with the brake bands inside rear hubs with foot pedal clutch.... o12 has a standard drawbar. i12s would have a pintle hitch..... early o12s would have the 9 inch cast hubs,[front, pneumatic] like the i12. later o12s had 16 inch round spokes in front[f&H],other rims optional. i12 had the 9 inch cast hubs,[front],some for solid tires, some pneumatic, later other front rims were optional.... o12s had a govenor [like f12s] all through production, but around 2000 rpms. very few i12 [real early] had no govenor, around serial number 581 ,i12s had a "handy" govenor on carb, around 2600 rpms.... both had higher trans gearing than the w12. around 9-10 mph.. early o12s would have a bucket type seat. later a pan seat that flipped up. same with the i12. both had solid cast rear rims..some i12s came with no fenders or modified in some way for a specific use. pg

The serial plate is on the back of the front fuel tank support (Under the tank) The engine serial number should be the same, on a small milled flat near the bottom of the engine block on the same side as the manifold and just ahead of the fuel pump.

Nice picture Athol, like the David Brown Cropmaster in the background. I am restoring one just like it at the present time. MJ
