826 diesel running rough

Hello, i recently did some work to my 826 like overhaul the injec. pump, new headgasket, valve job, and injectors. The tractor now starts very hard and runs very rough, smokes, for about ten minutes. When it warms up, it runs/sounds fine. Readjusted the valve tappets three times-everything good there. Does the pump need to be advanced slightly, or do i have some other problem? any help greatly appreciated....

You didn't grind the valves did you? On a German you can't grind the valves because it sets them in the head and reduces the compression enough that it will not run or start very good. The only way to do valves on a german is to replace the valves and seats to maintain proper valve height. Also make sure your pump timing is dead on as one degree either way will cause the problems your having.

If you had new seats and valves the recession should be correct, however, the service manual on those engines is way too abundant on their specs on valve recession, you need to hold them to very minimum. General worn condition of sleeves and pistons etc can cause same problem of course. IH made a higher compression piston available to help these engines start and clean up better and it does wonders. Far as timing, I have found that Inj pump repair shops often do not get the fuel pressure adjusted correctly there fore affecting automatic advance operation even advancing them when trying to start which is a no no. If you have original pistons you need to stay with original timing setting but if you use high compression you have to back off a little. I can't remember the specs on that. All diesel engines are critical on valve recession not just the Neuss built engines. Also, there have been some headgaskets that were a little bit thicker than specs also. I have been there.
