farmall 400 wants a 301

I can get a Farmall 400 with a seized engine. Ran without oil and locked up.

I have a ih715 gas combine with a good 301 engine.
The combine is rusted out in the bin. I am going to scrap it out. But the engine is good.

My question is will the 301 bolt into the 400 chassis? I have an extra set of frame rails. I understand there will be some other modifications needed. But my main concern is the motor plate and the flywheel/ starter problems I may run into.

Anybody with any info? or experience doing this?

Joe

A rear plate and frame rails from a 460/560 would make the job easier. To get hydraulics I assume that you would need to use the pump on the combine engine. In that case you need to fabricate your own front mounts.

A larger problem may be that the two engines are designed to run at different RPMs. Rated speed of the 400 is 1450. Minimum overload speed of the six cylinder is probably 1800 - 1900. Rated speed somewhere in the 2300 - 2800 range.

560 flywheel, 560 pressure plate with live pto hub removed. Then take a 560 clutch disk, have a M clutch spline installed instead of the 560"s.

M and 560 use the same backspacing from the rear engine plate to the back edge of the starter ring, I belive its 4 inches.

Im not sure on the starter ring,,, Id belive the 560 should work,, because,, I can put a 450 flywheel in a M and still use the 2 bolt M starter without changing the starter ring. So,, Id say you can use the stock 400 starter and the clutch setup from the 560 and bolt the two halves together. 560 frame rails bolt right up, and you can use a M-450 bolster if you decided to keep the 400 tin, with the overhead steering shaft. Hope this helps. ChadS

WAAAIIITTT!!! 400 chassis is being used, not a M,,,, If the 400 and the 560 had the same clutch splines, then the whole 560 clutch should work without removing that pto hub,,,,,, Sorry bout that. Chad

The combine has a rear engine plate also. I will have to look and see if that plate might bolt to the 400 bellhousing. What about the combine clutch it self? Probably different but who knows. Looks like I may have to investigate.

I thought about doing this for the novelty. If I could do it cheaply. Well thank you for your input. I'll post on which I decide or do.

The combine engine mounting is different. You need the front and rear plates off a 560 to have a prayer of making this work.

You are also going to need to extend the frame rails I think.

460 parts will NOT work. The bell housing on a 460 is smaller, and matches the H/300/350.

If you have the combine plate, and a plate from the 400,,,,,, you have the template,,,, drill some holes, bolt it on. ChadS

Swapping the engine front plates would make mounting the engine in a tractor easier but you will lose the provision for the hydraulic pump that the combine uses. That series engine used in tractors all had transmission driven hydraulics so there is no other easy choice for the pump.

The 460 frame rails and rear plate should be the same as the 560 and 660. The bell housing is smaller but that is only after the split. From the H through the 350 that size tractor used an 18 inch wide frame. Although the 460 replace the 350 in the series, the frame width was changed to match the larger tractors so they all shared the 20 inch width. The width of the bell housing does indeed match that of the 300/350, but only behind the flywheel. The front of the housing is two inches wider.

The clutch on the back of the engine on the combine is the separator clutch. It is an over center type. If the combine is hydrostatic drive there is no other clutch. If it is gear drive the transmission clutch is down at the transmission.

Chad,

Good point on the plates.

Owen,
The combine engine does not have a hydraulic pump on it. Same engine as an 806. Hydraulic pump is in the tractor. I just realized that point.

It is a hydro combine so that zeros the clutch possibility.

So its back to when I tear it down. We will see.

Thank you again,
Joe

Pretty sure the farmall 460 frame rails have curves just in front of the center housing to neck down to the smaller size than what a 400 or 560 is. If I remember right they also use 5/8 bolts like a 300 or 350 that mount rails to center housing.
