'53 Super A brake issues / replacement

Hello, when applying the brakes on a slight grade, the driver's right side brake makes a squaking sound. The tractor stops well but not as well as I'd like. I've never changed or inspected brake linings on a tractor so I'm looking for a little advice. I haven't been able to find any step by step procedures for replacement/inspection and the shop manual I have only has a rudamentary diagram. What is the level of difficulty for relining/banding? Any good step by steps available? Thanks

Neither of the shop manuals I know of for an A goes step-by-step. What I'd suggest, before you get into replacing/rebanding, is to get the owner's manual and try the adjustment procedure first.

If that doesn't do it, the step-by-step is to follow the instructions for removing the final drives from the tranny (on the left) or the ned of teh differential shaft housing (on the ringht) and while they're apart, clean or replace the bands as necessary.

Aquanosis: The squaking noise could be oil on brake band. It could also be lining worn down to rivits, however I find the band will break before that happens.

It's a lot of work taking these apart, wheel and final drive have to come off. Lifting and keeping the final drive balanced during removal takes some equipment. If I were you, I look for an IH Super A service manual. Even is you find one for A, 100, 130 or 140, brakes will be slightly different, however handling that final drive will be same.

I wouldn't try to reline the band. After years of use the band is brittle and will soon break. Just not worth it for the labor involved.

have you tried spraying some brake cleaner in them just mite help. I reline mine with rivets seem to work fine. I will also turn the drum on the lathe with a sharp tool and they realy grab.

Other than the weight and tackle needed to remove the final drive assembly which, according to my IH Shop Manual requires removing the cap screws retaining the housings to the transmission case. Are there any tricks or parts other than the brake components that I'll need to remove or replace? Are there any adjustments or specific procedures required to reassemble the final drive to the transmission? When the final drive is unscrewed and removed, does the differential shaft simply slide out of the transmission case? Anyone's simple version of a step by step will be useful and appreciated. Anyone got pictures of their Super A final drive removal? I'd love to have as much info as possible before I step into this. Thanks everyone.

aquanosis: It's all in the IH service manual I mentioned. Typing a simple description will only get you in trouble. The manual is close to six page of type and photos covering this subject, and those photos are each worth a 1,000 words.
