high cost of tire replacement--getting harder to get on-farm

Had to get one of the rear tires on my M replaced last week. I had to replace the other one this spring. I farm 160 acres and the tires were about 10 years old and just wore out from the field work.

Replacing a 13.6 x 38 6 ply with tube and fluid cost $575! OUCH!!

It also seems to be getting harder to find someone that replaces these tires on-the-farm. There used to be more service stations around here that did this. When I called them up they say they no longer have a truck and have gotten out of the farm tire replacement business. Ever my local COOP doesn't due on-farm tire service anymore.

If you have to replace all the tires on a tractor like an IHC M, with front and rears you could easily end up shelling-out $1300. Something to consider when buying a used tractor.

Price is typical. As hobby tractors, I have no use for fluid. I pull the rim and take it to the business and let them do the work. No problem here (western KS) getting on farm service, though. Probably $60-$75/hr now, haven't used it in several years.

That's why I like the smaller tractors. Two new rear tires mounted dry and old ones disposed of for $360.00.
The bigger the tractor the smaller the wallet.

See you have found another reason I do all my tire work my self. I do at time need a little help or have to use my loader tractor to move the tires but sure beats paying $100 plus to have some one come out and fix them and that is if you can even find that some one

Just purchased two Goodyear Duratorque 16.9 x 30 6 ply tires for the 584. $700.00 a piece plus $55.00 a piece for the tubes up here in Eastern Canada. I am going to call a guy to come out and change them because of the fluid. Independent guy that just owns a truck. This is all he does. He seems to be fairly busy. I don't know the price of his service yet.

Every time I go look at a tractor I get funny looks from the seller when I tell them I won't take it at full price because of the tires. First criteria...engine must turn over and tires must be good. Recently added is that it must have good brakes. If I never have to replace another set of gooey brake shoes covered with brake dust and leaked fluid it will be too soon.

$150.00 to come to my place and change out 2 rear tires that are loaded plus the two front ones that are not loaded. 2 wheel drive tractor. I supply tire and tubes.

$150 for labor seems reasonable. I imagine that this took him 2 hours or more. $75 an hour for labor is cheap, even if it is only for changing tires.
