new to me 706, need advice

I just bought a 706 for my first tractor (hopefully didn't pay too much).
I have few things to work on and would appreciate some advice or experience with these issues:
1) Power steering-takes about 2-3 minutes after startup of working it back/forth to function.
2) Brakes not working well. Adjustment or hyd. system?
3) Some antifreeze leaking at back of engine near head/block interface, but no oil in antifreeze or vice versa. Need head gasket?
4) Some blowby, light oil smoke under load. Almost 7000 hours, when to rebuild?
thanks

If it's any help, I believe the steering and brakes are on the same hydraulic system. The fact that you're having problems with both means it's a problem with that hydraulic system, not the steering or brakes individually.

Change the hydraulic filter (and probably the transmission fluid) for servicing as a start. If there is a gell on the filter, it indicates water in the system. If so, let the tractor set for a few days, loosen the drain plugs in the bottom of the transmission and final drives just enough to let water drain out. Changing filter without changing the fluid is worth a try if water is not too bad. Make sure all "O" rings to the filter are in place. Insure fluid level is to the full mark. Run the tractor hard for several hours so the hydraulics will heat to and stay at normal operation temperature for at least 4 hours. If this does not solve the problem, look at the pump for a solution. Could be worn beyond repair or could be "O" ring or gasket bad. If it does solve the problem, find a shed for the tractor and keep it in it when not in use. Head gasket or overhaul is your call and depends on how much you use the tractor and how much aggrevation you are willing to put up with in hard starting issues (diesel?).

If this is a Diesel do you have the D282 engine with glow plugs or the later German Diesel engine which does not have glow plugs to aid starting. The D282 was known to blow an occasional head gasket. Which Diesel engine you have is much better than the gas engine unless the orninal 3 ring pistons (with no sleeves) has been updated to 5 ring sleeves and pistons. I believe the Diesels were 5 ring sleeves and pistons from the factory making it a far better engine. Armand
