help !!! why is it that every time i buy a cub it will crank good with the clutch out but when i try to crank it with the clutch in it wants to drag ??? put different starter on them, new battery, help thanks keith

ScottyHOMEy is right. Putting new 80-90 oil in the trans will help some. Putting 0gauge battery cables on it will help, and pushing the clutch down (disengaging it) removes both mass and viscous friction from the starting load on the starter. JimN

Flop, I suspect that the problem is that a Cub does not use a conventional throw out "bearing". In most cases the throw out bearing isn"t a bearing at all, it"s a solid piece of graphite. With the clutch depressed that graphite is pressed solidly against the fingers of the pressure plate and the friction is sufficient to make it more difficult to turn that engine over. Similarly, a cub will lose engine speed when the clutch is depressed - due to that little bit of friction.

maybe there is a teminology mismatch here but I read his question as it cranks better with his foot off the clutch pedal than it does with the pedal depressed. Curt seems to have read it the same way I did.

I read it the same way as Curt Cooke and rhouston.

A mechanic and/or engineer I am not ; a 20 year working Cub owner I am. Engaging the clutch while cranking --- doing what one would do to put a running tractor in gear --- will slow the starter by 20-30 percent.

So Curt's explanation , I believe ,is right on.

Cubs should ALWAYS be started with the gear shift in NEUTRAL and your foot OFF the clutch pedal.

Cubs have a graphite throwout BUSHING, not a bearing. The clutch fingers are grinding on a flat surface, not spinning a bearing like normal tractors. This adds a lot of drag, and if your electrical system is 6V and not up to snuff, it can slow the starter down signifigantly.
