1948 H gear shift removal and deck

Hello do i have to remove the gear shifter to remove the deck that covers the trans? I tapped on the pin below the bell part on the gear shifter and it didnt move at all.Not sure if the caps are there on the ends. Are the caps steel? If so,How do you get the caps out??
thanks john

You could get the cover off without removing the shifter, but it would be hard to get the shifter back in place when you replace the cover.

I can't help you with removing the shifter though, mine's held in place with a pin/hitchpin arrangement. The shifter is under spring tension, press down on it while you tap in the pin to see if that helps.

The caps are soft metal. Remove the one on the left side of the tractor 1st. I drilled a small hole in the middle and pried it out. You can then use a drift punch and tap the pin against the other cover and it will come off with little or no damage. Make sure the tractor is in neutral as this will make the reinstallation alot easier. I used caulk to seal the hole I drilled in the cover.
