Painting MD

Have an MD that I want to paint after solving some mechanical issues. Have some of tractor down to bare metal. It probably will be too cold to paint by the time I get around to it, so can I paint the bare metal with a self etch primer to prevent it from rusting, and then use an epoxy primer over that, when time and temperature permit? Or should I just leave it alone until I'm ready to paint? The tractor is inside. Any advice appreciated.

I would use the etch primer while you have it bare. Is that called acid primer too? I used that on wheel weights and I never top coated them.
They're blue and still look pretty good after all these years. Hal

This is a common question on the Paint and Bodywork Forum on this site. First you don't need the etch primer, it is made for new metal that bodyshops don't want to sand. If sheet metal, sand it with 180 grit, clean it with wax and grease remover and apply epoxy primer -- not from spray cans, but real two-part epoxy. If cast wire wheel and clean it good. Different brands have an application window usually about 3 days - one week. So before you topcoat or apply surfacer, scuff it with a scotchbrite pad and apply another coat. The bond between the epoxy and the next layer must be chemical and not mechanical, thus the window. Epoxy is water proof. Read other info on the Paint and Bodywork Forum.
