removing sector gear from H bolster shaft

I'm trying to work some of the play out of the steering on my H.

I can not get the sector gear off the shaft. I&T suggests using a suitable puller, but any puller big enough to grab the gear is too big to fit between the gear and the housing.

I can not bring myself to beat on the end of the shaft, since I don't know how tight the inner race of the thrust bearing is on the shaft. How do you do it ?

Thanks

Greg

i jack teh front wheels so they are about an inch off the ground, then use a 2 jaw puller on the bolster. there is a little bit of a flare there to get a grip on, back the nut off, then snug up the puller and strike the center bolt on the puller with a hammer. that is usually enough to get the gear to pop. when the gear is off, the shaft will drop right out the bottom if the front axle is off, so be careful, its heavy.
