I just bought a wd 9..McCormick-Deering.I have to go buy a battery, trying to determine if it is a 6 or 12volt I took one of the bulbs out and is # w 1143 any help would be great...

With a starting and lighting system it probably was 12 volt from two 6 volt bat. Common to find them replaced with one 12 volt battery.

I believe they were positive ground. It will likely work either way. I would hook up the battery with the polarity determined by the size that the terminal clamps are being used now. Big post in big clamp etc. Then, without starting it, I would turn on the lights. If the Amp meter moves to discharge I would go with it as is. If the meter moved to charge (the wrong way) I would reverse the polarity of the batteries, and run it that way. Again do not start the tractor for this test! JimN
