sticking brake on an M

I have an M, I believe a 1952, that the left brake sticks on after it sits for a while. It has the disc type brakes. I can use the tractor with no problems, park it, and the next time I go to use it, the left brake is locked up. Sometimes it will loosen up if I rock the tractor, but sometimes I have to take the brake apart and tap it with a hammer to free it. The disc and springs have been replaced. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Just a guess, you have the brakes adjusted up so they work great but a little to tight and they are rusting to the hubs.(Just not enough clearance) Or the balls and plates are worn out allowing the balls to get past the ramps.

I agree it could be too tight of an adjustment. If you use the brake lock as a parking brake, and don't heat up the brakes with use when you use the tractor, the same high humidity conditions will lock them up. If it is IH disc with 4 retaining bolts it could have worn ramps allowing the balls to get into a flat spot. Good luck. JimN

I had the same problem with my Super C. The ball bearings in the actuators were a little rusty, and would stick. I took them apart and cleaned them well. I put just a slight coat of Never-Seize in the slots, and on the ball bearings. I have read other places not to do that.., AFTER I had done this. I've never had any problems with doing this. Just don't over do it.

I have also had them grab in the spring, when they sweat, and cause possibly a little rust on the face of the acutuators. It only does it going forward. I simply put it in reverse, at at an idle, and ride the brakes a bit. Seems to clean them up, and work smooth afterwards.

Use high-temp never-seize. It is copper-based and doesn't gum up like the standard gray never-seize. Costly (I paid 15 for a small can this summer) but worth the extra money. When I used my SM regularly on the hay rake and manure spreader, I only had to clean and re-lube them once a year.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll have to check the condition of the ramps. As for the adjustment, I have backed them off a ways just to be sure, but I could try backing them off some more. I don't use the brake lock, so that shouldn't be a problem. Could just be that the left side parts are worn more, or the right may have been replaced at one time. My Grandpa bought this tractor new, but was sold to a neighbor about thirty years before we got it back, so who knows what may have been done in the meantime!

I should add that I have lubes the mechanism with marvel mystery/diesel mixture and it seemed to help for a while, so it could be a rust problem.
