we have tried to start with batter charger. tried with 12 voilt from truck, had a little effort but no go. took the starter off went throught it seem ok. the lights work!no magneto, so could it be starter button or the red hot wire from starter button to starter.

thanks,

I take it its not turning over?

When you took the starter off did it spin freely? did you bench test it? Did you make sure the engine is not stuck in the M? try prying on the ring gear with a prybar and see if it turns

Try pull starting it with another tractor or a pickup truck. Takes two people and also a chain. Go very easy at first to be sure engine is not stuck. Armand

when we had starter off it spun real good with battery charger. we did not have the starter bench tested yet. it just will not turn over enough to start???

How long has it been since you run through your wiring and connections? 6 volt systems simply don't do well if you have dirty or corroded contacts at key points in the system. This includes some grounds you may not think of like the mating surface of the starter. Most of my 6 volt troubles start there. Check your continuity from battery to starter with a meter and should be able to trace it down.

Replace the cables, corrosion gets under the insulation where it is not easily visible, that has happened to me. As stated below, clean ALL connections. I have had starter buttons go bad. Most people recommend 00 grade cables, 2's are likley ok; if you have 4's or 6's they are too small. The M is what I consider to be borderline for 6 volts, unless everything is perfectly clean at all times. I have a 6 volt H that starts fine. My M was coverted to 12 before I bought it. Replacing the cables and cleaning connections made a world of difference, even with 12.

It should kick up to full RPM almost instantly, fast enough to roll itself across a bench. If it takes off slowly it needs rebuilt.
