Question about 84 series tractors

There was a post earlier about the 66 series and missing numbers.

My question, does anyone know why IH decided to make the 784 and 884? There were no 64 or 74 series tractors in these sizes. I'm just curious why the sudden addition.

I have an 884 and I believe it is a great tractor. The only complaint I really have is that it is a bit light in the front end, but I don't have front weights so that is probably my issue. I've been looking for another one in reasonable shape.

Any opinions on these tractors? I'd like to hear some more about them before I buy another one. Anything to avoid, any early warning signs?

Thanks.

Marty there were 384,484,584,684,784,and 884s. Also in the earlier models the was 574s and 674s. And later there were 485,585,685,and 885. They were all basicly the same with improvments and up dates as they went from the 74s 84s to the 85s. The 884 is a good tractor and so is the 885 we have a 885 and it just keeps on going and going. Any how hope that helps a little. Erik..

I have a 584 and I think it is a great tractor.

I have an 84 series training seminar manual that has an IH model comparison for the 84 series. the 784 was compared to the 686. The 884 was not available early on, so it is not in the manual.

We had a 684 that I liked. Once we got the brakes sorted out and the motor rebuilt, the water jacket was half full of what appeared to be sawdust. We got it used.

I think there was a 184 and a 284 too, but they were more of a cub cadet or cub lo-boy.

The same basic rearend design and motors were used right on up through the CIH 4240s and such. The motor internals were largely unchanged, looking through the Tisco or A&I books at Dwight's one day, I believe it said the rebuild kit for the DT246 (884 motor?) fits CIH models up through the 4240.

Thanks all.

I was aware of the 684 and down. I was just curious about the 784 and 884 and what they developed from. I assumed that the 684 came from the 674, 584 from the 574, etc.

Another question. Was there much difference between the 74 and 84 series?

For instance, what is the difference between a 674 and a 684?

Here is what IH said at the time were the differences in general between the 84 series tractors and the units they were replacing:
1. Family design styling
2. Maintenance free battery
3. Two new engines used in the series
4. Two post protective frame available for 84 series
5. Units are made completely in England (except engine).
6. Hydro tractor available under 70 PTO HP
7. Two hundred hour oil change
8. Lucas electrical system
9. Dunfoss steering hand pump

To add to this:

The gas models were all dropped
The hydro 84 used a Delco starter and didn't come with a maintenance free battery

I could swear the I&T manual we had for the 684 had info about gas motors in it. Maybe it covered an older series, too.
