H rear tire size

I am trading for a Farmall H which has a 12.4x38 with good tread on one side and a ~40% 13.6x38 on the other. This will be my first Farmall. I have not seen it yet, but the owner tells me that it rides about an inch higher on the one side than the other. I'll be using it for work so how it looks is not too important, but I am wondering if running it a lot with the mismatched sizes is hard on the differential or causes any other problems. I am hoping that I can trade the newer 12.4 to someone for an older 13.6 eventually, but I don't know how long that might take. I'm in central NY. Thanks in advance if anyone has any advice. I'll post a picture once it comes.

I'd even it out. Whatever you can get cheaper. There isn't a whole lot of difference between 13.6 and 12.4, although most guys run 12.4.

If you really do not care for appearance I doubt if it will harm tractor. We used to run night and day sometimes turning land and one wheel was usually slipping a little which would be a lot harder on pinion gears than having one tire slightly taller. Couple inches on tire that stands over 4 feet tall is not much.

Replace the 13.6 with a 12.4. Also make sure both have the same ply rating, preferably 6 ply on the 12.4. A 4 ply will have a noticeably smaller diameter than a 6 ply.

NDS is very correct. Disking and dragging, contour farming, and all turns in the field under load "use" the differential. In a passenger car the issue is handling and safety of control. Both are affected by tire size and rolling diameter. In the tractor it is no issue at all. Jim

I would put the 13.6 in the furrow so you don't wear the seat bushings out as fast :) Like they said, it probably won't hurt the tractor, but it would bother me. If I could get the job done for cheap I would even it out. IDC how, whatevers cheaper (with consideration for best tread for your $)

Thank you all very much. I'll start asking around locally and see what I can find. My understanding is that I'm better off dealing close to home because of shipping costs. If I can't find what I'm after right away it is nice to know that it won't hurt it to run it the way it is for a while.

I would replace the 13.6 tire with another 12.4 tire. 13.6 x 38 is actually a little too big for an H to operate most efficiently.

Agreed.

Wont effect differential at all...When you say using it for work? what percentage of work would
be for pulling? plowing would be in my opinion
the worst..that 1" difference would put a lot of
drag by pinching plow
