Farmall 460 Gas

I've got a 460 gas with a stuck engine that I am getting ready to put in the shop for the winter to get it up and running. The problem I'm having right now is that I cant get it to steer whatsoever. I know it has power steering and I'm wondering, do I need to take the lines loose or what do I need to do to be able to steer it? It's kind of hard dragging it around to the barn with my other tractor when the front wheels of the 460 are turned about 20 degrees to the left. Thanks for any help/suggestions!

I forgot to mention that my tractor has a aftermarket SpeeCo wide front end. I dont know if that makes a difference or not.

Check with the Tractor Vet. He posts on this site and knows a lot about the 460 series. There should be a way to hook the steering into the tow tractor and steer the towed tractor with a remote on the towing tractor. Use a 10 or 15 foot push bar instead of a chain and you can push or pull the dead tractor well as steer it. When the salvage trucks come to pick up fire damaged tractors or combines they hook hoses to the steering on the dead machines and with the winch and remote steering one man can most generally load a machine. My Big-4 has a stuck engine and I pushed into the shop by myself using my 560D with a push pole and controlled the steering with a remote on the 560. Steered it where I wanted it. The tractor vet can tell you how to hook the hoses to your 706. The type of front end on the 460 will make no diffenerce Armand

The steering on a F460 is mechanical with hydraulic assist. When you say you can't get it to steer do you mean you can turn the steering wheel but the wheels won't move or things are so tight that you can not turn the steering wheel?

If the steering wheel turn free without steering the most likely problem is worn out splines on the shaft and yoke at the front end. If the steering is frozen so that you can not turn the steering wheel then you have problems in either the front steering gear or the front axle assembly.

Owen has it right!! Iwas thinking of having an external steering cyl. that you could plumb into and having a 560 Farmall of my own I should have been thinking in 560 mode. My bad. Armand

Block both rear wheels and jack both front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel. Let us know the results. It is possible to take the steel lines loose at the pump and with the help of adapters connect them to the remotes of another tractor. This will only circulate the oil. To steer the tractor you will need a helper to do the steering.I will look at my 560 Farmall for more ideas. If it is the front axel is froze or stuck the best thing to do would be to remove the wide front and replace with a tricycle front to get the tractor into your shop. Where are you located? Armand

Armand, I'm in SW Iowa. I tried something similar to your idea once already. I lifted the front end off of the ground with my loader tractor and tried to turn the steering wheel but had fo luck. I also tried hitting the tie rod ends while it was off the ground to see if I could loosen things up. Still no dice. So to clarify, both the front end and the steering wheel are foze up and not able to turn left or right. The wheel bearings spin freely, I just have no steering action. I used to be able to steer it about 4 years ago when I first brought it home. However its sat outside since then waiting to make it into the shop. Thank you and Owen for your ideas! I may still try the adapter/ hyd assist idea by using my farmall 400 as the hyd power supply. It'll be a few days but I'll get back to you when I can.

Your problem is simple, old-fashioned rust. Something somewhere in the steering system has rusted up. My first guess would be the bushing immediately behind the steering wheel, as that is the part most exposed to the weather.

Don't bother with the hydraulic assist idea. All you're going to do is break something.

If you can't lift the front end of the tractor with the loader and push it into the shop, then unbolt the steering arm from the bolster so you can manually turn the wheels. You could also disconnect the tie rods if that would be easier. Take a piece of pipe or some bar stock and make a temporary tie rod to keep the two wheels going in the same direction. Just drill holes in the ends and bolt them to the steering arms where the tie rods were connected.

Once you get it into the shop you can figure out why it won't steer.

With what you have told me you need to rig a short boom in your loader bucket, lift the front of that 460 and put it in your shop. Than disconnect the tie rods and with the front wheels of the tractor off floor check each spindle to see if it will turn. At this time the steering gear box will be disconnected from the front wheels and if the gear box is ok the steering wheel should turn. Also if the the steering shaft has any movement the bushings should be ok. Also down where the steel hyd. lines enter the back of the steering gearbox is a splined connection. The steering shaft needs to telescope at this coupling.Your problem will be at any one or more or all of these points. If you don't have a service manual you need to get a I&T service manual or I.H. shop manuals as all these points in the steering linkage will be explained and have pictures as will all other parts of the tractor.
