farmall m,wheel locked

i have a 51 m i bought and have been working on , got it running, painted and now the left wheel is locked , right one turns , brakes are working, clutch seems o k,, gear shift seems fine, not loose, took starter off and can turn flywheel with bar, .. i haven;t driven it much, but everything seemed fine , moved it 5 times.. got me stumped thanks for any help jim

pull the left brake cover and see if the lining is frozen to the drum in there. even tho the pedal and linkage moves, water and stuff can get under the tin cover and gum stuff up. Shawn is probably right. my 42 m was froze up on the right wheel. it was the right brake stuck. if the inner seal leaks oil into the brake area, all kinda stuff can gook it up.

i meant left brake not right. Your sure its not stuck in 2 gears? Can you get it running and let the clutch out slow? Could be part of a bearing lodged between the bull gear and case.

Has this tractor been upgraded to disc brakes? If so the metal linkage in between the two discs may be rusted and/or have broken springs and is jammed; i.e. not releasing. Armand

i had to pull it backwards and the left wheel made a noise,, but i could pull it foreard o k the strarter quit so, i have to get it rebuilt monday the flywheels turns, i will have to look and seee how to pull cover for left brake,, not hard???

left brake is pretty easy. the brake rod comes thru from the right side of the tractor. there is a linkage on the tin cover. a small shaft comes out of the tin cover. where the linkage hooks to it, there is a cross bolt. spray up with a little penetrating oil, then remove the bolt. spread the clamp a little with a wide blade screwdriver and wiggle the linkage off the shaft.take the woodruff key off the shaft too. then remove the bolts that hold the tin cover on. you may need to slide a putty knife between the tin cover and cast housing to break it loose a little, then it should come off. the right side cover you need to slide both brake pedal out some if i remember right.

Don't force it! See the discussion by CVA59 below. You probably have a loose part wedged between the bull geat and the rear end housing. My guess it is one of the bolts from the differential.

I strongly suggest that your take the top off the rar end. You can remove the loose piece and replace/return it to its rightful place.

Jack the left side of the tractor & take careful note when the weight is just coming off of the wheel if there is play in the axle going into the left casting. If lots of play, could be a bad bearing[inner or outer] that has locked. First check out the brake thing as already laid out above.--below.

hi i have it up on blocks and it's as though it is in gear..there is no play in axle,, i think u are right there is something in bull gear.. the brake is a band right?? it wouldn't be this solid .. i will pull top off and check it next week.. is the shifter spring loaded? is there anything else i should be careful of?? the seat and steering column are tapped into cover, right?... is the fluid #30 oil, i can't find my manual thanks for the help jim

The shifter is not spring loaded. But, be careful when you put the lid back on to make sure you do not bend the the shifting forks.

Yes, the seat and steering post are tapped into the cover. You do not need to remove the steering shaft, just fasten it out of the way. Also, remove the belt pulley drive. That lightens the weight and gives you a view into the transmission as you lower the lid

I lifted and lowered the top on mine with a chain hoist hooked to bolts screwed into the seat holes.

I used 85-90W gear oil.

For safety, put blocks under the lid before you put your hand into the rear end. All that weight could do serious damage to an arm!

i have a john deere with loader i should be able to pick it off with that i have some ratchet binders with chain i could hook to seat bolts,, i could use to take it off. don't have a shop, but have it by a tree, typical shade tree mechanic thanks jim

Start by draining the oil and removing the PTO. That should allow you access to see what is causing the axle to be locked. If the problem is the brake locking the pinion gear you would a little bit of movement with the tire.

hi i tried calling u ,but a woman answered i left message i got this m apart and back together , combination of debris in rear end and brake.. i put it back topgether and even thought the bars on shifter lines up it's in gear i suspect i don't have one of the forks right on the shaft i didn't take it all the way off i just got the rear of it up about 10" and worked from there,, am i right thanks jim
