Howdy,,

Everytime I go to start my Farmall 200 it grinds with gut wrenching noise.
After a few attempts it will engage with no noise and start..
Any input is very welcome

I have a 100 with same problem have split to replace rear crank seal and found ring gear beat up and also starter gear about a 40 dollar expense new and 25 used

A few things it could be. Starter gear not sliding out all the way, Starter gear worn, ring gear worn. Take it off and check. It will be obvious which one it is. Mine was doing the same thing a few years ago. I posted the pics below here an most people told my I would have to change the flywheel too, but I guess it looks worse in the pic than it is because I have never had a problem since I changed the starter. I got a remanned one for $119 from our host here and it was less than having mine rebuilt Notice how the gear on the starter is chewed up

Remove the starter then you can turn the engine over to inspect all the teeth on the ring gear. If there are bad teeth on the ring gear a new bendix drive wont do the best unless it has good teeth to enguage. Mite not be a bad idea to clean the armature and add new brushes along with new bushings on the armature.

This picture is good example of a damaged drive that will cause engagement problems.

If the flywheel ring gear teeth are burred over on the ends they can be cleaned up with a file or small grinder. The ring gear teeth do not necessarily need a bevel on them but it is helpful if they do. It is critical that the Bendix drive teeth are beveled on the non-load bearing side.

Here is a pic of what it did to the flywheel.

You can see where it was rubbong against the ring gear. Change that puppy quick so you do not ruin it. I did not realize how worn mine was until I changed it. It turns over so much faster now.
119$ for a remanned one here is a great deal.
