Working on the A's

Hi all,

My dad and I have been doing a little work on his two Farmall A's. They've just been sitting under cover and my dad has decided he might want to sell them so we are trying to get them running good. They ran good when he bought them around four years ago. A year or so ago we got them out and cranked them up. One still ran good and one would start but did not want to stay running. This time neither one wanted to start at first and the starter on the one that ran good before seemed to be dragging so we changed it out with the one on his parts Super A. We got it running Ok but it appears we got a little trash in the carb because suddenly it did not want to run without some choke. We'll have to clean up the carb and (and maybe the tank) and do a full tune up on it and see how it runs then. This one has the aftermarket hydraulic ram with three point. The other one we got to run on starting fluid only even though we cleaned the carb and have a good flow of gas to the carb and out the bowl drain. We'll have to look into that a bit more. I won't be able to go back up to my dad's place until Tuesday due to my work. (12 hour rotating shifts.)

Thumbanger,

The tractors are at my dad's place in extreme Northwest Florida about five miles Southwest of Atmore, AL. Yes, that is a '64 Falcon Wagon. My dad also has a '65 Falcon Wagon and and quite a few more in various states of disrepair. http://members.cox.net/lwblumjr/dadsfalcons.html. I do not know at this time what he will ask for the A's. A friend of his has a Tractor repair business in Canoe, AL and he plans on putting them out there to see if he can get any bites. (Those pictures were taken the last time we had them going.)

D. Coleman,

I sent my dad a e-mail about your post but he has been having trouble getting his computer to work until this evening.

Update! We didn't get to work on the A's until after 3:00 PM this afternoon but I took both carbs off, disassembled, and cleaned them. My dad disassembled he last one but did not remove the main jet from the bottom of the fuel bowl and it was plugged and not allowing fuel to the venturi. Both tractors crank up and run Ok now. The better one that was running before is running fairly well now and the other one stays running and is sounding better and better the more it runs. We will need to run them both some more and both really need new points, condensors, and plug wires at least. Hopefully we can get them running good and reliable soon. I don't know if we will have to pull the gas tanks and clean them or not yet. The better one with the aftermarket hydraulic three point lift and ram seems to work Ok so it will probably sell a lot easier but of course will cost more, too. My dad has a draw bar for the other one and we will have to put it on before he sells it. We ran out of daylight today. He actually drove the tractor that would not stay running before around the field a bit this afternoon as it was trying to get dark. It has been quite a while since that one has moved under its own power. Progress is being made. Hopefully more to come soon. I guess I'll have to get some newer pictures since the ones above are from over a year ago.
