Hey guys, The radiator on my H is caked badly at the bottom section with dirt and grease. Would you recomend taking it completley off as a part of the restoration and cleaning it thuroughly? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

If you mean remove the radiator, yes. As to the inside, if it is not leaking, be careful. A good inside flushing may cause leaks. On a lot of them the corrosion is all that holds them together.

Restoration is kind of a tricky idea. To some it means making a tractor clean, run well, and be painted nice, to others it means made as new in every detail, even using old paint formulas that are very bad, to be original. Me I like what works and runs well. Paint is nice, but good regular looking paint is fine, not the mirror clear coat wet look being used to some people's fancy. And they like it so it is excellent for them!

Getting the grease off W/O removal will be much easier than removal. Using Scrubbing bubbles, or Gunk (brand)engine cleaner will do it. Use more than one application, and do not use a pressure washer. Garden hose is as powerful a spray as it can handle. JimN

Jim, I recently removed and pressure washed a radiator from an Oliver 70. it took quite a lot of washing to get all the mud out of it. It would have taken days, I expect, with just a garden hose. After reinstalling it had a leak that it did not have before. I see that as a bonus, however, because I found the leak while the tractor was still all apart, and I'm not using it yet.

If it is running hot i woould have it boiled out at a radiator shop. But sometimes cleaning them will lead to leaks. It depends on what you are going to use it for and how original you want it to be.
