Whats wrong with 140s?

Some friends have a IH 130. They said they heard alot of bad things about the 140 and the 130 is way better. My dad has a 140 and its been a trouble free tractor other then a leaky head gasket.

Anyone hear anything bad about the 140?

The 130 and the 140 are bassicly the same tractor and in equal condition should be equal tractors. I don't know why he would think the 130 is better than the 140. They may like it better just because it is one model older.

130 and 140 same basic design. 140 had a little more horse power and a slightly more advanced hydraulics/touch control. Think H and Super H as comparison. RN

Maybe your "friends" are not real friends.

You wanna hear another good joke? i once had a clown that owns a 826 hydro tell me that it was better than my F806D because in his words, "806's had weak axles". don't listen to everything you hear. most of it is worth the last belch you released. Your 140 is probably just fine.

They never had a 140, they talked to some guy who had one and didnt like it. I think it was something with the transmission. Did they change the gearing in them?

It's kind of like those high-fructose corn syrup commercials.... "You heard what they say about it..."

Nobody can ever tell you who "they" are or what "they" said...

I like the 140s because they are newer and have less wear and tear. They made the 140 until 1979 and by that time they werent used as much as in the 50s when the 130s were made. By the 70s the farms were bigger and a lot more farmers were using 2 row equipment and 50 and 60 hp tractors to do the heavy work. So the 140 just had small jobs to do and thats why they have less wear on them. Erik..

Yeah, well, I own a 140 and it's way better than his 130!

I'm kidding, but I have indeed owned a 140 since new in 1966 (I was 14 when Dad brought it home) and I'm the only mechanic to ever wrench it. The only time it ever breaks is when I abuse it or neglect it or something just wears out. Wonderful machine. Even better than new thanks to alternator and electronic ignition.

It's possible it was a Hi-clear 140 that was the culprit. It would be faster than the standard ones because of the larger rear wheels. It takes some getting used to. 2nd is usually uncomfortably fast for the cultivating depending on the crop, and first gear on the slow side. Usually it's 1st with a high rpm. Not at all as casual as 2nd on the C. Otherwise an excellent machine. Markus

Even IH made a bad one here and there.

The problem is that human nature is to condemn something in whole based on an unscientific sample size of ONE.

-Someone gets a Ford pickup and has a few problems with it. Conclusion? All Fords are bad.
-Someone buys a new 130 and has no problems with it. He gets a 140 that was used hard by its previous owner, who sells it as a "cherry" tractor. It ends up needing many repairs. Conclusion? 140s are not good tractors.

The complaint I heard about 140's vs. Super A's involved the gearing. Some who had cultivated for years on a Super A and then bought a new 140 were disappointed. I know the 140's turned more RPM's (1800 vs 1525 ?) and I don't know if IH changed the gearing or not to compensate. I have a Super A and a 100 but I have never ran a 140. I do wish the Super A had a low range for transplanting.
