I have a farmall a which has no third or fourth gear.Want even try to go into either one.My temp problem is after a few mins it builds alot of steam and pressure.I was thinking the waterjacket was constricted by rust. How do i check and or clean it.I had the rad cleaned and fixed.Any suggestions i would app.

Ok, first the trans problem, can you get it in gear? can you get it in other gears? Could be a broken shift fork or a bent or broken rail. I would just take the top cover off the trans its quite simple. As for the over heating how is the condition of the radiator? Are the fins nice and clear? is there dirt, and sludge build up inside? Could be plugged water jackets like you say however i would start with the radiator first. Take it off and clean it yourself or have it sent to a shop for a pro cleaning, there generally not to much to have this done. Money well spent.

Well the trans issue could be in the shift rails in the cover. Not too hard to fix. Make sure it is in neutral, pull up straight, and watch in the opening crack (Pictures are good) to locate all forks and pivots as it is lifted. Look at the shift rails to see if they are rusted. If free, look at the 3-4 sliding gear to see if it is jammed, or rusted in place.
The cooling system is a different matter. I believe that the engine will not overheat in a few minutes if it was just rusty inside. The issue may be a blown head gasket, or a cracked head. See if there is antifreeze in the oil. If so there is internal leakage that needs to be repaired before operation, or it will ruin bearings. A cylinder leak down test would help define the issue (on each cylinder). It is described in the archives many times. JimN

Others are onto the trans problem. If it's overheating that quickly, I'd really suspect a problem with the ignition timing being too far retarded. Does it sometimes backfire when you shut it down?

There is no thermostat in the Farmall A. Your block is plugged. Junk builds up in the lower block where coolant flows at the bottom of the sleeve. I would remove the radiator and the lower outlet. Then back flush with compressed air and water. You can look in the block and see if that clears up the small nickel sized holes. I have used a stiff wire and got them clear you will find a lot of junk in the lower passage its just what happens after 60pluss yrs of bad water.
