FarmAll M turns off after 60 seconds

Hello all, I have an FarmAll M tractor that turns on good but it turns off after approx. 60 seconds. I opened up the carb. and cleaned and blew out all the jets with carb cleaner but still have the same problem. It seems like it back fires right before it turns off. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You need to do the normal trouble shooting. #1 check for a good blue/white spark and then #2 check that you have a good steady flow of gas from the drain plug in the bottom of the carb. One of those will most likely be your problem and once you figure that out you then need to find out why your missing one of them

Check for spark right after it shuts down, unless it starts right back up. My thinking here that if it shuts off after running, it might be the coil.

If it consitantly runs the same time and quits I'd look for a fuel restriction either in the line or at the float valve. Best way to check is take the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and see if you have a good full stream that don't slow to a trickle.

If you didn't remove the tube fitting where your gas line connects to the carb the screen behind that fitting may be plugged with rust & dirt. Hal

My nieghbors 450 was doing this a few years ago. It wasn't getting fuel,so after checking from sediment bowl to carb and finding nothing I reached up and opened fuel cap. As soon as I lifted it off, it sucked in some air and gas started pouring out. Cleaned the vent holes and problem was solved.

Shutting down after 1 minute, definitely a fuel starvation problem. That's about how long they run if you shut the fuel off at the bowl.
He's plugge up upstream of the fuel line.

How long after the tractor stalls do you have to wait before it will start again? Right away? A few minutes? 30 minutes? 1 hour?

There are two common problems that it might be:
1. The ignition coil is overheating.
2. The flow of fuel to the carburetor is slow.

By the way, we don't "turn on" a tractor. There are other things we "turn on" like a light, or, well, that would be inappropriate for this group to say more...

It's common to say that we "start" the tractor. Same as we start the car.

When the tractor stops running and you didn't shut it down, it "stalls."

I'm guessing you're not from the USA. Am I correct? It's very very very uncommon for someone from the USA to "turn on" or "turn off" a car, unless they've never seen a car before in their lives.

Thanks for the info. I actually had not checked the stream. Last night I disconnected the fuel line from the fuel shut-off valve and then opened the shut-off valve and to my suprise there was only a trickle. I blew some air pressure into the fuel tank with the valve open which increased the fuel stream a bit. After that I reconnected the fuel line and started up the tractor. It didn't turn off anymore when idling but once I increase the throttle it does turn off after a while. Which tells me that there is still not enough fuel making its way to the carb. I am going to work on the tractor later this week. I think the problem is the fuel shut-off valve. I am going to replace and let you guys know how it went.

Petcock. Is that what the fuel shut-off valve below the tank called? I am not too familiar with the tractor terminology. Any, it does seem like the Petcock is the problem at this point. I disconnected the fuel line last night from the petcock and there was only a trickle of gasoline coming out.

Yes I am from the USA. Down San Antonio, Texas way.

Lots of folk down here say turn on and off the car and everything else.

You hit it right on the nail. The petcock (fuel shut-off valve) below the tank seems to be bad. I disconnected the fuel line from it last night and there was only a trickle coming out. That or there is much crude in the fuel tank. I am going to work on both later this week.
