Hi, I am hoping to someday buy a Farmall Super M. Do the earlier years or the later years run and work better? Thanks, Lou

Didn't they only make them three years. 51-53

With that said, the stage II are "better" bc they are more likely to have live power and live hyd. This is a good thing. They got buy w/o it for15 years, but they got by with horses for a while too...

depends on what you need the tractor for. i have 3 m"s and a stage 1 super m. all run well and can do a days work. the gassers are uncomplicated to maintain with basic mechanical skills. the late supers that had live hydraulics were real handy and the supers had a little faster gearing. the smta could be had with a live pto and torque amplifier, but they are spendy tractors to find. the diesels were fuel sippers compared to the gassers, but pricey to overhaul. if you can find a super with aftermarket power steering, live hydraulics and an aftermarket m+w 9 speed transmission, you will have a real handy tractor. with an aftermarket 3 point hitch too, you"ll be "standing in tall cotton!!".

Lou, I'm with glennster as I have a 1951 M with the features he noted except the live hydraulics. My M has a Heisler 9 speed and I really like that set-up and think they look more "factory" then the M&W. I also have a 1954 SMTA with all the goodies which is undoubtly the best letter series large tractor. Those Heisler 9 speed equipped SM tractors aren't that hard to find around Iowa and Illinois where real tillage and dirt work was so common. Find you a stage 2 with a live pump as noted unless you can find a SMTA worth the price, Hal.
