Super MTAD engine noise

I am looking at a Super MTAD. The owner says it runs fine but has a small tick noise in the engine ever since he cold started it with either one time. What do you think is wrong with the engine now and how much to fix it. I am not sure if the TA works but I am afraid to ask because the owner does not know what is it. I am going to look at it Wed morning and would sure appreciate your input. The tractor is real straight with fair tires. How much do you think I should pay for it?

not sure what a 'tick' noise is... It could be a number of things, rod bearings, wrist pin bushings, bad injector, heck even wrong timing can make then make odd noise. It may not be anything at all there kinda loud 'knocky' diesels to begin with. THe engines are quite pricy to work on compared to a gas version. I have a Super MD and i can tell you its gota be a labor of love to work on them. As for a price anywere from 5000 to 10000 plus for Super MDTA.

I for one don't like the sound of 'a small tick noise ever since he used ether'. Also with what those engines cost to work on, the TA is just about a drop in the bucket. That said the two I have (Super MD, W-450D) are more in line with the basketcase category so anything that runs is a step up. Just be wary. Sam

Just keep in mind that one can easily spend $3000.00 to rebuild one of those engines. Listen to the engine when you get there and try to make an assesment of the problem. It could be something as simple as an out of adjustment rocker/bent pushrod or something as serious as ???? I"ve got a Super MD and it"s a neat machine. Good luck on getting that SMTAD bought.

If I were trying to buy a SMDTA from a guy who apeared not to know what the TA was the little hairs on the back of my neck would start to stand up. If you haven"t already, have a face to face, ask questions and maybe you can get an idea of where the guy is coming from. If its something you really want you may be willing to pay a little more or take a chance on it. I once had a very wise employer tell me, "Never go against a gut feeling."

I would go to harbor freight and spend 3 bucks for one of those mechanic stethoscopes. Then you can scope around and try to hear if it is coming from a rod, crank, or camshaft bearing or from up on the top end somewhere. What you tell him you find out is your business. If it is coming from a bearing area, that knocks the price way down and you may want him to listen to confirm it.

There is a test to check the TA with the brakes. I'm not sure exactly what it is. Put it in a certain gear, engage the TA, and apply the brakes. Either someone will post it or you can look through the archives for TA.

Bought a 400D at a auction they were using ether to start it. Same type engine. Pieces of the top piston ring were on top of the piston. Some embedded in piston.

I think it is worth $20,000 plus, maybe a little more if you were out east.

The whole post sounds a little iffy to me...

Offer a thousand, with the contingency that if the noise goes away and it runs well (Gas and diesel) that you will go 500 more. Way too risky to pay more, but way too nice to pass on without an offer. Jim

tell you want, if it runs, you should be able to see if T/A works or not. If it runs, moves, tin is good, rims are good, then this tractor is worth big bucks all redone right. I have been looking for one and junk goes for $4500 around here. That is without fenders, bad tires, and tin that needs to be replaced. This tractor is some guys dream, so if you pass on it please pass infromation on where it can be found.

I have personally seen a sharp Super MTA D go for over $20,000. But that did it right, and the tractor was better then new. I know the engines cost alot ot work on, but if it is worth anywhere near $20,000 then you can afford to put money into it. My two cents. I would place it in my shed and show it off once done and not worry about the $$ going into it. Keep it long enough and I think yo uwill make out, if not the grand kids would love to have it.

Not nearly enough info to guess. No mention of tires, sheet metal, power steering....ect. I can tell you this. I have never seen one bring less than about 2500 on e-bay, even with a stuck engine. If it runs and moves, the casting codes are correct with no broken castings. The guy will have no trouble getting 3500 out of it.

Where are you guys from. You can"t even buy a gas SMTA in MD FOR 1500.00"S. We had a SMTAD sell at auction for 8900.00 last fall and I figured at least another 9000.00 to restore it and you have to figure you are going to go over budget. It has to be worth at least 4500.00 if not more, anyway that"s what it would bring in md. If you don"t get it let me know where its at. As far as the guy not knowing what a ta is, I bought a 350 from a guy that didn"t know what they were as it was his fathers and hadn"t been run since he was a kid and he had all john deere"s. Good luck with it and let us know who it is if you don"t buy it. Ed

Yep, for sure. I always thought there was something wrong mith my MTAD because of the noise. Always figured one of those knocks, pings, or bangs was gonna be the last one. Had it at a plow day one summer and two brothers who have been restoring and playing with Farmalls for years we're checking it out. They asked me "Did you OH the motor?" "No, why?" I said. "She sounds good" they replied.
