'53 Super A oil leak from front crankshaft seal

Have been having a substantially more noticable oil leak from around the
crankshaft pulley since I changed the oil a couple months ago. I put in SAE 30. There is no other leaks or any smoke from the exhaust but I do see maybe more soot on the muffler flapper. Is any of this due to the oil type used or just that I need to replace the front crankshaft seal? What would be the difficulty in doing so? The shop manual description is rather vague. Tips or references would be much appreciated. Thanks.

the worst part is getting the pulley off the crank you will need a clamshell puller with any kind of luck you should be done in 4hrs

You have to remove the steering sector first. Then use a bearing seperator to remove the pulley and you aint going to get it done in 4 hrs as you have to support the front so you can remove the radiator and steering housing as the pulley doesent come off without removing the steering sector.

Do I need to remove the front cover or governor housing or is the seal removed simply from behind the pulley after it's removed? Farmall Parts.com has what's called a Front Main Seal part #FP24638. Is this the part and are any other washers or gaskets needed? Thanks

It is not absolutely necessary to remove the front cover, but I would so that it doesn't get bent. You will need a gasket, likely from CaseIH, the seal is generic and probably available locally from NAPA, etc. Get a bearing separator ($$$)to put behind your puller to avoid breaking the pulley. Do not attempt to pound or pry it off, or you will have more problems than you do now. It will not come off easily. Get the IH part numbers from the parts section of www.caseih.com. external_link may be ok, but they are new enough that I don't order from them yet.
