Farmall H rear end leaking

I have an H that will leak out the rear end gear oil in a couple of months time. It is leaking out right behind the belly pump (where the rear frame bolts together). I think it is a bad shaft seal near the hydraulic pump drive shaft. Can I get to it by just dropping the hyd. pump, or do I have to (gulp!) split the tractor there? Thanks

You don't even have to drop the hyd pump. There is an access plate behind the hyd pump and before the rear end housing. You can access the seals there. I just replaced mine last summer, but I had the trans out. Not sure if that would make it harder or easier, probably just different.

Joe - That's a relatively straight forward task. It can be readily accomplished without splitting the tractor.

Hardest part is dropping the belly pump. It's somewhat awkward and top-heavy - have an assistant help you(!)

A couple tips:

- Replace both input shaft (upper) and belly pump shaft (lower) tranny seals while the belly pump is out. (If the lower seal is leaking it's virtually assured the upper seal is worn out too).

- The replacement seals will be only about 1/2 the thickness of the original (leather) seals. This is NOT a problem! Simply press the new seals in flush with the retainer face - or 1/8" -1/4" farther if the shaft is worn where the seal lip rides - and it'll be good.

I just changed the countershaft seals on my H, and I put in two new ones to fill the space taken by the old one. The belly pump was out anyway. I went on the archives and found advice to put the tractor in 5th gear and block the wheels to unscrew the nut on the end of the countershaft. I used the belly pump drive coupling as a way to engage the nut. I just took out the cotter pin that holds the collar and put in a grade 8 allen key bolt and then used an 18" crescent wrench tightened around the collar. The bolt head stuck out far enough to keep the wrench from just spinning on the collar. It was pretty easy to do, and then it was all smooth sailing from there on out. I hope that is helpful.

Make sure you check those bearings behind the seals. If they are bad, your seals will not last that long and you will be doing it again.
