GEAR REDUCTION STARTER ?

DO THEY MAKE A " STOCK " APPEARING GEAR REDUCTION STARTER FOR A FARMALL M ?
DOES A DIESEL STARTER FROM A FARMALL A LOW GEARED ?

Others will disagree, so this is only my opinion: M's are better suited to 12 volts, due to the size of the engine, H's are fine with 6. Can't really answer your question as I know nothing about gear reduction starters. Your last question must have a misprint. You imply that a Farmall A has a diesel engine, it doesn't.

Or if you men a starter from a diesel M, the answer is no. They start on gas, initial gas compression is likely similar to a gas M. Don't know that I have seen it in print.

The only gear reduction starters I've seen for an M use the original pieces but the armature is cut off and a pinion gear is installed on the end. An additional housing is added between the case and drive end frame that contains a ring gear on a shaft which also uses the original starter drive. It makes the started about two inches longer and the case is offset from the drive end frame.

The MD uses a heavier starter than the gasoline model.

Forget the gear reduction starter. I don't think anyone makes a "stock appearing" gear reduction starter. It would be 12 volts anyway. Just convert it to 12 volts and be done with it. Mine has been that way for more than 30 years. Unless you are running some ungodly compression in a pulling engine the 6V starter on 12V will crank it fine. If you are trying to satisfy the "correct police" there is a 12V equivalent for everything on the tractor. The generator is hidden, put a lid on the battery box and no one will know.

Justin Webber from Webber Tractor Parts sent me this photo. It was taken from his stock. He may still have it. I didn't buy it.

Save the photo and blow it up. You will probably be able to read the text.

Justin used to hang out here but is more frequently seen with the handle of NOSIH on the Red Power Forum. I am sure he can be googled as well.

I pull against an ahole in "stock" class that used an M to start his M everytime. He had too much compression to get it started with a starter. Maybe a gear reduction would have worked.
I don't think you belong in stock class if you can't get it started with a starter.

Are you pulling that SMTA called "Lone Wolf" up my Madison/Edgerton?

Picture of the gear reduction part on a IH starter that others posted about. IH used gear reduction starters on SM LP tractors. May be stretching things to call it stock appearing on another fuel tractor.

The original Farmall M was 6 volt whereas the Farmall MD used a 12 volt system (two 6 volt batteries in series to give 12 volts). Compared with the 6 volts for the gasoline/kerosene/distillate engines with from 4.25 to 1 (kerosene) up to 5.9 to 1 (gasoline) compression ratio engines the 12 volts would handle the MD with 6 to 1 compression ratio on gasoline for starting.
The Farmall MD was only about 14 to 1 compression ratio on diesel, about as low as one can go for diesel engine. My small IH German built D-214 2 cylinder diesel engine has a 19 to 1 compression ratio.
