Hydro 86. Trans Troubleshooting

I recently came across a Hydro 86 with cab and looks like new for a $3500, I called on it figuring it was too good to be true, and of COURSE, trans problems. The guys says, when you move the lever to fwd, it doesnt move, bring it back to neutral and then back to fwd, it will take off. the tractor has all kinds of power in low range, but will not stall the engine in high range. He installed a new charge pump. and new oil. He also had someone check the pressures and he was told they were alright, but i dont know how much knowledge this person that checked the pressures had. Any chance this could be a simple fix, by simple i mean anything that does not reqire rebuilding the main pump and drive motor. I am planning on going to see this machine this weekend. Anything I should check to eliminate some problems. He said that he was told that the trans was rebuilt about 10 years ago. 7000hrs on the machine I forgot to mention that the tractor sat for over 6 years and was not used. I believe that the trans worked fine before it was parked. This tractor also has 2 new rear tires that are included in with the tractor, so even i can get it for $3000 the tires alone are worth 1500 so really its a 1500 dollar tractor. I am a mechanic by trade and have some knowledge on Hyd Trans
any input would be apricated!

Thanks
Matt

The most likely cause for the tractor not moving until you move the lever back and then forward is a snap ring that has come off the shuttle valve. Another possibility is too much wear in the lever and quadrant. Hold the lever to the side as you move it forward to check for this problem.

As far as not being able to stall the engine, that is normal. In Low range the hydro should be able to overcome the brakes. In High range the brakes should be able to hold enough to open the relief valve. Once the relief valve opens the load on the engine will decrease so you will not be able to stall the engine.

think I would be worth a risk, I guess he did have the filter apart and did find some brass, is the snap ring hard to replace?

It looks to good to be true .At that price you can part it out and still get your money back. The tractor looks real good and i think you better get over there or it will be gone. Erik.

Nice looking tractor, and new rear tires to go with it also makes it more than worth the risk if you have the funds to buy it. You mentioned they changed the fliuds, but "guess" they changed the filter. I would pull some of the cowlings off and check the linkages and the hydraulic filter before I went further. May be a worn rod, pin or ??? and just need replaced, built up or adjusted. Check that suction screen and cut open the filter. If there's serious internal damages...there should be evidence of it. in the filter and / or screen.

Good Luck with the tractor.
