What Hydraulic oil to use for Farmall 140

Just got all the hydraulics rebuilt on my 140 and need to fill it now. I have some new cling tuff hydraulic/transmission oil that I use in my New Holland TN60A and was wondering if I can use it.

It says it"s approved for John Deere numbers J20A, J20B, J20C, JDM, J21A, J14C Plus a bunch of numbers for Ford, New Holland, White and Massey but nothing for Int. or Farmall.
Is there a certain number I should be looking for?

I looked at my Operators Manual for the IH 140 and states the correct hydraulic fluid for the Touch Control system is IH Hy-Tran Fluid. There are other general hydraulic fluids that meet the Hy-Tran specs but I keep only Hy-Tran around for my Super C, 140 and SMTA hydraulic systems as noted in the operators manuals. Never had a problem using the correct fluid. Might cost a little bit more for the brand stuff but it is the compatible fluid for the entire system. Manual states the refill capacity is 6 3/4 U.S. pints for a drained system. An operators manual for your tractor is very valuable, hope this helps, Hal.

The TN60 uses NEXPLORE hydraulic oil. (the old Ford 134 oil)

The 140 needs to have HYTRAN hydraulic oil.

NEXPLORE is soon to be retired by NH and replaced by HYTRAN.

I know you'll get the finger wagging and admonishments of "It's cheap insurance" but coming from an engineering background and knowing a little about how oil does its thing, I cannot for the life of me see what difference it will make in the simple hydraulic system on a 140.

If the oil is wet and slippery, and about the right viscosity, there's no reason it won't work. There's nothing particularly exotic about the parts inside the 140's hydraulic system; no plastics or ceramics or rubbers that are sensitive to certain additives.

I agree mkirsch, any universial tractor fluid that "meets or exceeds" OEM specs will work in a +40 year old tractor as well as most modern equipment. My 504 has had generic fluid in it since 1962 or the first time the fluid was changed. If it doesen't "meet or exceed" OEM standards, then the company will be sued and loose their tail. The same refinery that makes Hy-Tran probably makes Delta Pride.

The purists that harp on Hy-Tran probably use Super Tech in their engines. I use Mobile 1 in all my automobile engines as well as synthetic transmission, differentials and transfer case oils. But when it comes to a 50 year old tractor, I feel that a generic tractor fluid is above what was available when it was engineered and manufactured. I do use branded 15W-40 in the engine, but I buy the brand on sale.
