After market 3-point

I bought a 1947 M with an after market 3-point on it. They brought lines from the belly pump to a spool valve mounted on the light bar and then to the 3-point. In order to raise the hitch, you first have to engage the valve from the belly pump and then the spool valve.

My question is. Can I remove the spool valve and run the 3-point directly off of the belly pump valve?

to answer your question, yes you can run the 3pt off the belly pump exclusively, but you will have less precise control of the hitch. That spool valve allows the belly pump to run all the time with no risk of damage because the spool valve should be an open center valve. Also, the spool valve may be set up so that the 3pt has down pressure which is handy for backblade work or with a scoop. That spool valve also allows you to run double acting hydro cylinders with a tractor with one way hydraulics, thus making the tractor much more useful. Hope this helps! Kippster

I run the three point cyl directly off of the belly pump on my "H". It has a one way cyl., pull lever it raises and holds, push cyl and it drops. The only problem I had was there is TOO much pressure from the pump and it would jerk the brush hog up and jerk the front wheeks off of the ground. When releasing the pressure it would literally drop the implement to the ground, SLAM!!!! I installed an adjustable valve in the pressure line to slow the flow and it works fine....Ed

Thank you for the response. This brings up a couple of more questions (I am new to this modern machinery, all my other farmalls are pre 1940).

When you pull the lever on the belly pump, are you activating a valve or engaging the gears in the pump?

Presently the cylinder has only one line going to it so it is power up and not down. If I run another line from the spool valve, will I have power down as well?

You are activating a valve in the belly pump. The gears are turning any time your foot is off the clutch.

No, you cannot add a second line. The spool valve is only a single-acting valve. It will not work as a double-acting, and cannot be made to work as a double-acting.

In this case, there is no point to the extra valve.
