super a plow set up

could some one tell me how the single bottom plow on a super a is suposed to bolt to the draw bar under the tractor? if i bolt it to the bar directly it is on a angle with the plow point to high.i am not sure if i am missing some thing on the tractor or plow any help would be greatfull thanks

You turn the drawbar around and mount it on the front set of bolts on the final drives. The drawbar is then facing forward and the attachment point is about even with the front of the rear wheels. It's best if you have the draft control rod that goes from the drawbar up to the touch control arm. If you have that, you only use the drawbar with the pin on the brackets, removing the bolt that fixes the drawbar height. If you don't have that rod, you can rig one, or you can plow without it. You will have to set the drawbar in the lowest position and lock it with the bolt to tilt the plow down so the point will dig in. Once you plow a couple of furrows, the drawbar can be adjusted up to plow at the depth you want. I used one of these plows a long time with out the draft control rod. I just set the drawbar at the lowest point and then used the rear lift to keep the plow from going to deep. If you have thc control rod on the front it easy to adjust the tilt with the hydraulics. Also when you bolt the plow to the drawbar, you will use the outer most holes and the wheel dish will need to be turned dished in so the plow takes the proper amount of soil.

thanks for the info haas i read your post and then found a post in the pics section and it is all clear now. thanks again

I had to turn that drawbar around on this Farmall A back in 1976. Since the brackets were left on the plow it made it easy to install the plow. It wasn't that hard to lift that 16-inch plow back then with those springs. Hal

What's the tread width setting supposed to be? My Super A is set up to the narrowest setting, and the plow doesn't cut more than 6" with it bolted to the drawbar in the proper location. I have to bolt it over towards the center of the drawbar to get a full cut.

I always plowed with the wheel dish turned in and the rim turned in the narrow direction, but with the rim lugs on the outside. That would be the next to narrowest setting. Narrowest would be with the rim lugs on the inside of the hub. To correct your problem, you can either move the mounting location on the drawbar, or you can move the wheel out. If you choose to move the rims out, to get the right setting, it may mean you have to swap the rims side to side.

Like this...

Be forewarned, if you have oversized tires on the Super A you will need a longer adjustment link and more than likely need some weight on the plow to get it to penetrate quickly... Or just air down the tires quite a bit... the 12.4's on mine make it a PITA...

Hi guys, I'm fairly new to the forums (well I have been reading for some time now!) Will the plow work on the wider wheel setting? my dilemma....I can move the rear wheels but the front axle is modified on the widest setting, unfortunately it has a solid welded piece (its been permanently modified for 5' beds). Besides the front wheels riding over the fresh plowed ground, would there be any harm to moving the rear wheels in only? Any help appreciated, these forums have been a great teacher to a once not mechanically inclined person!

For future reference, rather than replying to a THREE YEAR OLD thread, start a new one.

Notice how people hardly ever reply to really old threads, and then only for two reasons:

1. They are specifically addressing the old thread asking for an update.
2. They are a newbie to the forum world.

As for your question:

IMHO, running the front wheel on the plowed ground will not work well. It can probably be done, but it would be so much easier to plow with the front wheel in the furrow. Steering will probably be much more difficult, and you will be constantly pushed off course by the wheel in the mushy ground.

Can this piece that's preventing you from narrowing the front end be cut off? Can the modifications be un-done somhow? Worst case, you could find an unmodified front end off of a salvaged tractor and replace yours.
