Farmall H changing mag to distributor

Hi guys please help! I have changed my mag to a distributor and can not get the miss out, and it also smokes all the time. The distributor along with cap and wires came off a H that ran fine. The other H now with the mag runs fine. What could of went wrong? Before I started changing anything both tractors ran fine. I thought I was bettering the one H I"m wanting to keep by switching it to a distributor. I adjusted the carb and timing made no difference. Any suggestion would be appricated. Sorry so long didn"t know how to explain any better.

I mean no disrepect, but why do you believe that a distributor is better than a magneto?

I actually prefer a mag. You can still start your tractor with a dead battery. Better starting in cold weather (if that is a factor for you).

Distributor's are a bit simpler (easier to work on), less moving parts, but functionally, I still think magneto's are better over all. Neither option works well without good points, plugs, wires, and condensor AND the correct timing.

If you want my opinion, put the mag back on and be happy! The best starting tractor I have is a 1938 F-20 with a F-4 mag.

A distributor will give more spark advance, resulting in more power and fuel efficiency.

Rusty, I absolutely agree with you on that. However, Farmallboyz didn't indicate what he was going to use the H for.

For basic usage, ie. hauling firewood, parades, etc. I would still go with the mag.

For real farming or pulling, then yup, distributor is the way to go.

It's kind of a toss up really. I'm giving some thought to changing my 1940 H back to a magneto and then eliminating the battery and electric starter. This tractor has a belly mower and does all of the grass cutting, which means I would have to whirl that crank at least once every week, but I have started it with the hand crank before and it's not that hard to do. Just haven't made up my mind yet.

May want to check out things you changed, on off switch good? Wire good from switch to coil? No damage to distributor cap or rotor?
If you removed and installed the wire on the distributor side post, make sure the insulater wasn't damaged. If its black smoke I would suspect the timing is to slow or the plugs are fowled. If a steady miss pull plug wires to find the one.

I went the other way and switched my H back to a mag.Had a distributor on it but something went on it one day so I threw the mag I have back on it. Starts way faster and actually seems to run better. I am sticking with my mag, plus I dont need a charging system on the tractor. Someone said a distributor gives more power. But with a dist you have to have a generator/alternator. So it takes power to run that,I cant see there being any diff between running the alt or running a mag. I am able to start my tractor dozens of times before my battery gets low. I like it,but thats just me.
