sputtering when load applied on M

My recently acquired M is coughing/sputtering momentarily when I apply load (release clutch or operate loader for example). It quickly returns to normal idle. Does it when its hot or cold. Before I start looking around I thought some of you experts could suggest most likely causes so I don't waste time. Is it governor, carb, points/plugs etc?
Thanks for the help

could be too lean open load screw 1 turn.see if that doesnt help.points,condencer,and/or plugs are also suspect. give a tune up,it probably needs one anyway.good luck

Sounds like a gas problem, or lack there of. First shut the gas off at the sediment bulb housing under the gas tank. Then check the screen where the gas line goes into the carb to make sure it's clean. Next remove the sediment bulb from the housing & the screen up in the housing & clean. With the bulb off careflly turn gas back on & make sure there's a good flow of gas fro the tank. If all those are ok it's most likely in the carb itself. Refer to the tractors operator manual & make sure all the adjustments are set correctly. Carb may be gummed up if the tractor hasn't been run for awhile & may need cleaned or rebuilt

Open the main jet adjusting screw to enrich the fuel mixture. Even my big lawn mower and garden tractor have this. Hal

I'd start with a gas problem. Remove the carb drain plug or the fuel line and run gas into a gas can/bucket for 5 minutes. May need a hose or funnel. You should have a good solid flow that doesn't stop. These carbs don't have an accellator pump like on cars so they need a big gulp of gas when the load applies. Those old tractors have rusty gas tank problems that choke off the fuel flow on high demand.

Could be any of the other things as mentioned as well. Let us know what you find.

And the winner is.....clogged inlet filter at carb. Plus there was no strainer at sediment bowl. I went ahead and replaced points/condenser etc too. Running fine now. But I have realized that this M probably hasn't been thoroughly serviced since Ronald Reagan was still an actor. I'll go through it top to bottom this week.

Thanks for the help
