Farmall H, kills

My 1944 Farmall H runs fine but when I go up a hill or putting it under a heavy load, it dies. If I roll down the hill and start it, it starts right up. What the heck is wrong?
 
It may have but I don't think so. This just started doing this, otherwise its been running well for years. Someone thought perhaps there is some sediment in the carb bowl which reduces the gas in the carb? And, when under load or going uphill it sucks the gas out and kills?
 
Fuel delivery is the issue. The inlet from tank to sediment bowl, or the sediment bowl screen, or the screen at the carb fitting, or the needle and seat are partially plugged. Fuel must run out steadily like a small soda straw. all in line filters should be removed unless they are for a gravity system NAPA has those, they are larger than those plastic bulb devices. Jim

These old tractors occasionally need to feel a little lovin' from their owners. Consult your owners manual, go through all of the recommended procedures for maintenance, and that H will be a happy tractor once again. Eager and ready to do whatever is asked of it.
 
Tim I don't have the answer for you but, my MH-444 just started doing the exact same thing yesterday. I pulled of the plug wire's one at a time and the tractor losses RPM's. I'm thinking fuel also, maybe the governor!Maybe bad fuel? Let us know what you find. If I figure out the problem on this one I'll let you know. It's bad enough that my the C has ant-freeze in the oil and the 444 is running awful but I had to borrow the father in law's 720 JD!!! Good luck Dale.

The needle and seat is buried deep inside the carburetor and requires complete removal and disassembly to access. I seriously doubt the problem lies in the carb. More likely you have something floating in the gas tank, or you just need to clean the sediment bowl.

Here's another thought, and it has happened to most of us at one point or another, but, how much gas is in the tank??
 
Well, I'm hoping for a simple fix. Great tractor. I let it sit every winter under a tarp. She starts right up each spring. Wisconsin winter does seem to bother her.

Disconnect the gas line at the Carb and see if you have a full stream of gas. Trickle means you have blockage in the tank. You may need to open the main jet adjusting screw near the bottom of the carb. Hal
 
Try using the hand throttle as if the gov wasn't working. Start on level and when you get to the hill start rolling on the throttle. If it runs OK doing this your gov is disconnected.
Did you have the carb off recently?

Same thing was happening on my tractor...I got on this forum and found the following awesome information...one often over looked and easy fix is to make sure your intake manifold is not leaking, or sucking air. On mine it was super easy, just tightened the two 9/16 bolts just after carb and tractor quit dying and got its torque back. I also suggest rebuilding the carb if it has not been done in a while.

Open the main jet adjusting screw even garden tractors and big mowers have this to enrich the fuel mixture. Here's a pic of the spare carb from the B&S engine on my Toro mower. Hal

Thanks. I"ll bee looking into it this weekend. The carb was gone through about 4 years ago. Hopefully its just loose.
 
Thanks. I played with it a little last weekend. When it started to kill I moved the throttle back and forth several times in attempt to keep it from killing. It would spit and sputter and eventually die.
 
Tim I figured out what was causing my massey to act like your "H". It was the distributor cap.The old one didn't look bad. Give it a try it's cheap fix. Good luck.
