Torque Amplifier 101

504 gasser is pulling good but I am not familiar with this TA principle. I am a thinking my TA is not making any torque change, not working, or possibly working all the time? I need some TA 101...that don't sound right does it? Anyways can someone please tell me how I can confirm if TA is working, not working, or on all the time, and the characteristics of a TA system that works properly.
Thanks,
David

if your stuck in TA mode you can outwalk your tractor in first gear at full throttle. to see if it's working just shift into TA mode and see if the tractor slows while rolling along in say first gear, you will feel it downshift....

When you shift it into Low (or TA mode) make sure you do it fairly crisp.

Just as Mike said, you should feel it down shift.

One way to test if it is strong is to put the tractor in fourth, throw the TA into low, and then stomp on the brakes. If the tractor stops and you hear whining noises, imediately release the brakes and throw the TA into high. This means your TA is weak and needs work if you plan to use it. If the tractor starts to bog down and nearly dies, then your TA is good and strong for now.

Just remember the TA is not meant to be a Low range gear. It is just meant to get you through a tough spot in the field. Also when the TA is in Low, the tractor can free-wheel in the direction of the selected gear, like a one-way clutch. i.e. if you have her in 1st with the TA in low and start down hill you will roll as fast as the tractor will roll down the hill until the planetary gears can't hang on anymore and come out at the speed of light.

Sometimes if you have no load on the tractor when shifting to TA, it's hard to notice the shift. Like Bk... said, put a load on it. If you have a hill you can pull a wagon or something up, do that and pull the lever... you will know if it's working then. Also like he said, it's not meant to run in TA (low) all the time, just thru the hard spots. I see on here all the time where someone says he runs in 3rd low for disking or plowing and I wonder how long their TA will last. [u:6d65fe2cba]Maybe[/u:6d65fe2cba] on the later versions it's okay, but not the earlier ones that I was familiar with... 350/450/460/560.

I don't necessarily agree with the other posts. Put it in 4th pull the TA back, and push on the brakes. If the TA is working and you push on the brakes, the tractor should slow and be under load. If it does not labor the engine, it is slipping, the tractor will probably stop moving. The main cause of a bad TA is that it is shifted too slow, pull the lever back rapidly and push it forward rapidly. Don' hesitate in between. It will slow faster when under load. Using the tractor with the TA back all the time should not hurt it. An advantage is that you can split the speeds in each gear and have 8 field speeds instead of 4.

With no speed change when handle is shifted.
If tractor freewheels with no engine compression hold back going down grade or will roll off when parked on a grade, with transmission gear selected the same direction as the down grade. Then the T/A clutch would not be engaging or holding for some reason.
If tractor doesn't freewheel and is hard to shift out of gear sometimes the T/A clutch is not releasing to let T/A shift to low or T/A range. If tractor stops when T/A handle is pulled back the parts that lock T/A unit for T/A range are bad.

Thanks to all for the info, help, and I say this forum is a blessing. I went out and shredded today, up a steep incline and pulled back the TA...low and behold she slowed down, but just when I pulled back a little past the holding notch. If I put her in the holding notch she went back to normal speed. Quick shift didn"t make TA stay engaged. I"m thinking the TA is out of adjustment?. I"ll get the manual and plan to adjust according to IH instructions. Also plan to not use it except for as advised.
Thanks again,
David

I have a Farmall 504 diesel and it has the option of "high-speed first and reverse". I believe this was a cultivating option. Point is it will run 3 mph in 1st and reverse. I use the TA a lot for loader work and have left it in TA all day making probably 200 direction changes a day with out adverse affects. This is just in one day. My tractor has been in TA more than direct drive for the past 3-4 years. If it is adjusted and kept adjusted (TA and clutch linkage) it will run forever.
